We arrived a little tight for time!! Traffic you know. So it was a very quick change and off on the trek to the pitch at Stanley Deason. Not the most popular venue but today the weather was kind. Honeybees were not - they came out all guns blazing and whilst we were still thinking we should have at least hit a ball before we got down to the match we were defending some aggressive play.
After the initial onslaught we seemed to settle down and made a few forays into their D and managed to get some shorts. However when Honeybees attacked they came as a swarm and despite a valient attempt by Mandi S to stop the head-height shot they scored. We didn't seem to be able to sort out their attacking formation which seemed a bit one-sided, Mandy A and Elaine only having one player to mark most of the time then it seemed several at once. Hannah and Georgia were doing a great job on the left, ably assisted by Caroline S who showed she hadn't lost any of her skills even though she hasn't the time to train in London.
Honeybees again had some luck with the second goal that flicked off Mandi S's inside leg to wrong foot Elaine on the goal line. We kept attacking but Honeybees were getting back and defending in numbers making it difficult to get the ball to our players. Half-time 0-2.
Hannah came off feeling unwell and luckily Jane had come to watch the game whilst down from Edinburgh. She offered to come on and after getting kitted out in various people's bits and pieces slotted in up front (the sight of her getting into Hannah's shorts should have gone onto YouTube).
With Jane back in her old position, Lorrie was spurred on to do yet more running. We were penalised quite a lot regarding the way we were tackling - something to work on at training and Honeybees were awarded another short. This time they converted. Play went to and fro and we nearly got one back but we all were fairly disheartened by the end and were glad when the final whistle blew. Many thanks to Chris for umpiring - it's now 4 pints we owe him.
Yet another pub for teas - making it expensive as we have to buy drinks again, and although the chilli went down well, good old sarnies and a cup of tea would be nice occasionally (or am I getting old!). Hopefully next week we can all be brighteyed and bushy tailed as we have another early game.
