Match Report(s)

What a dreadful day - weather wise. Going to Steyning to play a match with no facilities in the rain is just no fun at all. We welcomed Ellie Lawrence to our numbers this week, I'm sure she was pleased to make her debut in such conditions!

A change of format put Jaynie up front with Lorrie, so Bren had to play at the back with the "youngsters" (yes I do include Wadey and Theresa in that - everyone is young to me) patrolling the midfield. We started very promisingly with some great forward play, however we we a bit lost when it came to picking up the opposition and from a break-away Southwick came through and scored with almost their only attack of the half. Half-time 1-0 down.

Once the misunderstanding regarding who was marking whom was cleared up we pushed forward and an excellent cross from Ellie was somehow volleyed into the net, after a bit of ping-pong, by Theresa. The crowd went mad - mainly made up of Theresa's family braving the cold and wet, fortified by our half-time Haribos. Worthing then continued to pressurise Southwick and forced yet another penalty corner. Although initially saved Lorrie persevered and scored.

Southwick upped their game and due to some unlucky misdirection from a cross, wrongfooting the defence, they scored, 2-2. It seemed inevitable that we would finish on a draw, but the continued and unabated play in the Southwick goal area forced their defence to put the ball past their own keeper.

Very good work at times, especially taking the weather conditions into account, making it difficult for some to keep upright. Many thanks to Ann Q for umpiring to all the team for not compalining too much.
