Match Report(s)

On Saturday Worthing entertained Folkestone on a bitterly cold day. With the visitors used to such harsh conditions (living in that vast wasteland to the east), there were a few wimps in the Worthing team that resorted to long sleeves and tights. Keep on wearing them Thermo Man!!!!

Captain Ansell made a couple of tactical changes this week to suit the squad make up, but the squad remained the same from last weeks game.

Worthing started brightly with Sciandro and Warner tidy and comfortable, probing the Folkestone defence. This control in the middle played Ginnaw in twice, for him to continue his ‘good’ form in front of goal; 1 on 1 twice – missed twice!!!

Lock, Humphries and Atkinson all tore holes in the opposition only to find the keeper on good form or falling to a last ditch tackle.

Worthing were playing well, only to fall behind against the run of play, a Folkestone short corner finding its way past Shepherd on the line. This put Worthing on the back foot and gave Folkestone a confidence boost. Their play improved and they pushed Worthing back and closed down the space that Warner and Sciandro had previous enjoyed. But patience and confidence are now part of the Worthing game and Shepherd and Godber played the ball comfortably across the back looking for openings in-front of them. When its not going your way it always seems to get worse; with Clayton forgetting which sport he was playing and kicking the ball in-front of the umpire, Worthing were down to ten men. As soon as Clayton was back on Shepherd decided that he need to take a break to and left with a yellow card. Then it went from bad to worse, the Worthing defence failed to react to the movement of the Folkestone forwards leaving a clear shot on goal that Binns could only help into the net.

Half Time 1-2.

Captain Ansell’s management training is paying off, with another incisive team talk that motivated the team for a second week running and the inspired change of bringing himself into the fore. Stand by for another second half of end to end exhilarating hockey!!!!

Worthing equalised very quickly with Warner finishing well from a short corner. Worthing took the game to Folkestone and played some good attacking hockey. Clayton and Sewell down the right and Beales and Ansell down the left opened the Folkestone defence time and again. With Lock taking inspiration from his watching family, he rolled back the years for a display of scintillating ball control mesmerising defenders , bring good saves from the keeper  and winning a series of short corners. With Lock helping himself to two goals and Warner adding another, Worthing’s goal tally was complete.

But as in recent weeks (I think you know what I’m going to say!!!!), Worthing had not had it all their own way in this period, the fluent attacking hockey was separated by Folkestone scoring and a second yellow card for Shepherd. This meant there were some nervous moments but with Massey always available to shore up the gaps in positions and the tireless running of Ginnaw to carry the ball up field Worthing remained in control.

Final score 4-3.

Next week Worthing travel to Eastbourne.

Squad: Binns, Godber, Shepherd, Beales, Warner, Clayton. Ansell (Capt); Sciandro, Humphries, Lock, Sewell, Ginnaw, Atkinson.
