Worthing Grind Out Victory Against The Bay

Another 3 points banked for the league leaders on Saturday at a bitterly cold St Andrews against a spirited Herne Bay side, who relied on the bare eleven travelling from Kent. Those expecting another emphatic home win were left slightly disappointed as Worthing struggled to convert their lion’s share of possession and numerous short corners into goals. However the main thing about this squad is that they keep going and ultimately were not to be denied those precious 3 points.

Worthing started well enough and had The Bay on the back foot from the off. Some committed defending, sometimes riding their luck combined with some sloppy finishing and decision making in the final third meant that the game remained goalless at half time. With a large squad of 15 to call on, it was always felt that the 2nd half should provide the opportunity to strike as the supreme defensive efforts of the Kent side began to take their toll.

One promising feature of the first half was the assured and assertive defending of Worthing’s back 2, Joel Shepherd and James Godber. They mopped up anything that came their way quickly and efficiently leaving Binnsy in goal largely redundant. This also allowed Andy Williams to spring forward from right half and he linked well with the two Aussies, Burriss and Sawyer in what looks like a blossoming right sided triumvirate. On a couple of occasions Williams was unlucky not to receive possession when well placed.

Worthing did miss their dynamic set piece specialist Warner, who was strutting his stuff with 2 short corner strikes in the 2’s, nursing his way back to full fitness. Although possessing some highly dangerous alternative options through Shepherd, Atkinson, Lock et al, there is nothing quite like the Warner howitzer to pierce even the most resistant of opposition defences.

Midway through the 2nd half it was Atkinson who popped up to force home the all important breakthrough goal and the relief was clear to see. This settled Worthing down and more chances came during a spell of free flowing hockey. Shepherd was denied by a double save when it looked for all money that he would bury it into the roof with a flick of those powerful wrists.

The game was made safe, when Grant Sawyer was reintroduced to the action with 8 minutes remaining, and collected the ball in the D, slightly behind him, but somehow managed to dig out a low flick right into the far corner. That was his 6th goal in 3 games and he certainly looks an increasingly important member of the attacking jigsaw.

All in all, a vital 3 points that perhaps would have been much more comfortable had chances been taken earlier in the game. The Worthing bandwagon rolls on into Kent next week with an extremely tough showdown against Marden Russets.

Team: Binns; Shepherd, Godber; Williams, Sciandro, Beales; Burriss, Ansell; Sawyer, Atkinson, Humphries. Subs: Ramiz, Lock, Ginnaw, Massie jnr.
