Match Report(s)

A nice early game at Kings College was the order of the day but unfortunately Worthing arrived half asleep. Mornings do not seem to suit some or even all of the team!!!!

With the enforced absence of Burriss; after his Saturday night investigations into the theory that; WHITE MEN CAN’T JUMP (wrong sport - no pun intended), Sciandro was welcomed back into the team.

Despite the team seeming to struggle on an indifferent pitch. Worthing took the lead through some great work down the left channel by Humphries whose pass found Lock for that instinctive clinical finish that we have come to know and love. But alas this is where it all fell to pieces; a lack of ball speed and under hit passes allowed Kings College back into the game. Their strong running forwards pressurised Godber and Shepherd and won a short corner. With Binns failing to ‘fall over’ with his usually speed and agility a soft goal was conceded. Worse with still to come, and with Kings College breaking quickly, a  pass across the ‘D’ found the centre forward at the back post for 3 attempts at a tap in, which he finally managed!

2-1 down Captain Ansell rallied the troops and Worthing took the game by the scruff of the neck and encamped themselves in Kings College’s half of the pitch. The blossoming partnership between Clayton and Sewell down the right tore apart the Kings College defence and this was the start of Worthing throwing everything bar the proverbial kitchen sink at the opposition goal. Again the rotten luck that had dogged the day held firm and the Kings College keeper was having the game of his life making a series of brilliant saves and the Worthing forwards firing straight at him when the rest of the goal begged to be hit. With Warner taking break, Shepherd was unable to convert a number of short corners and with play continuing in or around the end of the Kings College ‘D’, Lock thought he had earned a cast iron penalty stroke, only for the umpire to think differently. Worthing finished the half 2-1 down.

A calm discussion at half time ensued, with Burriss imparting his brilliant incites into the half and Captain Ansell asking for more of the same (pressuring the opposition and scoring that is). Worthing again started brightly; the re-introduction of Warner and the winning of a series of short corners were the key to immediate success with 2 Warner missiles finding the net in quick succession. Worthing continued to play the game in the Kings College half and with the oppositions defending becoming even more desperate Lock again thought he had earned another cast iron penalty stroke, only for the umpire to still be on a different wave length to him.

With the Kings College ‘keeper still outstanding, when knowing and not knowing about the saves he was making! Shepherd had a short corner cleared off the line and Worthing finished the game comfortably in control.

The highlights of the play again were Beale at left half having his usual tidy and effortless game and Sewell at both right wing and right half, in only his second league game proving his passion and adaptability, earning him the Man of the Match award.

Next week Worthing entertain Folkestone at St Andrews.
