Marden Russets 2 v 3 Worthing 1st XI
Scorers: Ginnaw, Warner, Sawyer
Worthing made the tricky journey into the Kent countryside in search of another vital 3 points against a Marden side who were 5th in the table. It was always going to be a tough game and so it proved as Marden had a very well drilled defence and were lightning quick to close down any Worthing player in possession. They looked to hit their front two early which did cause Worthing problems, with Godber and Shepherd having to be at their most alert and Sciandro helping out as needed as the early replacement for the injured Warner. As difficult as Marden made it, Worthing were probably their own worst enemy in terms of the amount of forced passes and squandered possession. Some patient build up was required; however this only arrived with the introduction of Dan Ginnaw after 15 minutes. He collected the ball in the inside right position and rather than join in with the game of ‘panic pass’ he intelligently held the ball until Sawyer had made a dangerous overlap down the right. He was picked out with a perfectly weighted pass into the space and drove into the D. The covering defender managed to snuff out Sawyers burst, however Ginnaw had continued his run and was onto the defender in a flash. He robbed him of the ball and charged into the D, unloading an unstoppable shot past the keeper for 1-0. Great goal!
This should have sparked Worthing into life or at least presented them with the opportunity to play a more patient controlled passing game. However if anything the play deteriorated further, not helped perhaps by some rather agricultural challenges from the home side coupled with a lot of unnecessary verbal. During this spell Worthing also started to make basic errors in dangerous areas which led to Marden scoring two opportunist goals, poor ones to concede from Worthing’s perspective. Half time arrived and we were 2-1 down.
Ansell rallied the troops and asked for the same sort of character, spirit and endeavour that has carried the side unbeaten thus far this season. The next 35 minutes were crucial in terms of any title aspirations. The play did improve in the 2nd half although there were still too many occasions when players were caught in possession or didn’t release the right pass. However Worthing capitalised on some of their other qualities such as keeping the effort and work rate high, whilst remaining disciplined. This ultimately gave them the edge over a Marden side who were beginning to lose their discipline. More poor tackles, sarcastic comments to umpires, tantrums with sticks being thrown on the floor led to Marden having only 9 on the pitch for a spell in the 2nd half. It became a game of defence v attack with Worthing trying to break the stubborn rearguard action from the home side.
Warner had to return to the pitch as Worthing needed his more clinical passing in midfield and of course the threat from the set piece. It was no surprise that this was the source of the Worthing equaliser, another brutal finish high into the roof and a message to all our forwards, “just win another short corner please!”.
Worthing pressed for the winner but with Marden restored to full strength they were also creating chances and we relied upon some resolute defending to keep out their short corners. Entering the final few minutes came the turning point of the game, maybe the season? The Marden forward found himself clean through into the D with just the keeper to beat. Binnsy was out quickly to narrow the angle and as the shot was released early, Binnsy pounced down low to his right to divert it around the post. A very scary moment, which was swiftly followed by Marden winning another short corner. Again we kept it out and in turning over possession released Dan Ginnaw down the right. Once again he released the ball just at the right time cross field to Ben Burriss who was left with a clear run into the left edge of the D. As the keeper and last defender tried to get across, he changed the direction of play once again with a fantastic ball to the far post, where Sniffer Sawyer was waiting to tap home. Two clinical passes on a fast break giving the opposition no chance, it was the type of hockey we’d been waiting to see all game. There was literally 30 seconds remaining.
A vital 3 points and Worthing move on to another tough test next week at home to Horsham.
