WORTHING 6 T.Wells 1 SCORERS: B.Lock (2) A.Warner C.Ackinson. M.Humphries D.Ginnau Worthing 1st Xl started their season off with a convincing away win against Tunbridge Wells. Having set high standards last season and not losing on the road, the sprit was high in the side, despite not having the usual pre-season discussions at Clacket Lane. Chris Binns started in goal, despite having retired last season, the fact that he has bought new kit suggests he is preparing himself for another season and is looking forward to the healthy competition for the keepers jersey from kieran Jones. With Alex Warner also making the decision to stay at Worthing this season and the return of Cerdick Atkinson from Chichester, once again Worthing will offer a threat from short corners. Daniel Ginnau and Andy williams have continued their progression this season with both players looking sharp and fit. Mikie Gubbbins has started to fulfill his promise this year and his hard work in training pre-season has paid off with his debut 1st Xl league outing. Worthing started strongly moving the ball at pace thropught the midfield to the forwards. New signing Mark Humphries (from Horsham)showed good movement and awareness and from the off, his intelligent running caused the Kent team difficulties. With Bryan Lock starting on the bench, Cirdick had his opportunity to impress and he took this oportunity. His running at pace and close control in the opening exchanges created opportunities and after some good work from himself and Johnny Massie, Matt Ansell found himself unmarked on the 'P' spot only to show signs of Mr Duncans first touch and the opprtunity to put worthing into an early lead was missed. Alex Warner playing at sweeper showed maturity and discipline througout and controlled the game, spraying the ball around the park with precision and pace. Tunbridge Wells failed to close him down and therefore the forwards had continous good ball to work with. Despite early pressure the game remained goal less. The Kent team were well organised and a threat on the counter-attack. However it was the visitors pressure that created short corners. Alex Warner's drags were kept out by two fine saves from the keeper, however there was a sense of inevitability. It took for Bryan Lock to come off the bench with 10 minutes of the half remaining to finish off a fine move and calmly slot home his and Worthing's first goal of the campaign. Andy Williams and David Clayton were reunited on Worthings right side and caused many problems for Tunbridge Wells,it was good work from these two down the right which created the second. Alex Warner recieved the ball just outside the 25 yard line and fired in an accurate ball which was superbly deflected from mark 'new boy' Humphries for worthing's second. The first of many we hope from the new striker. After a motivational chat from the skipper at half time, Worthing came out with guns blazing, creating countless attacking opportunities. However it remained 2-0 and after a trade mark pass from james to the opposing centre forward, T.Wells were awarded a short corner. In typical fashion James cleared off the line and made up for his mistake. However there was no avoiding the fact that he was the clear runner for WOW. After this slight scare Worthing rallied, and two further goals were added from short corners. The first was a blistering drag from Alex and the second a well worked slip left for Bryan to fire low and into the corner. At 4-0 T.Wells looked disjointed and ragged. The continous pressure had taken its toll and the superior fitness levels of Worthing's midfield allowed Worthing to control the game. A creative and incisive burst from Dan Ginnau down the left followed by a superb pass to Jonny Massie set up the veteran midfielder. His cricket stlye shot from the top of the 'd' nearly decapitated Bryan, and it was only a flying fingertip save from the keeper that denied him, however the keeper only managed to push the ball onto the bar and Dan Ginnau followed up and slotted home from close range. It only remained for Worthing's other new striker, Cirdick to get on the score sheet, which he did scoring a brilliant instinctive volley. At 6-0 the points were safely Worthing's but the team continued to work hard and press to keep a clean sheet. However, late into the game T.Wells were awarded a short corner which was buried by their striker giving Binns little chance. A satisfying opening win for the team with many good points and lots to work on in training. Worthing entertain newly promoted Old Willies next week for their first home match of the season. Willies went down 7-0 to Eastbourne so will be looking to rectify this, and will offer stiff resistance to the Worthing attack.
