For a variety of reasons and for the first time this season, the Llamas were unable to field a full team for the fixture against Brighton. Unwilling to concede defeat, the brave 9 players decided to soldier on, 2 girls down…

Brighton piled on all the pressure from the start, but the Llamas defended brilliantly, with Ann making some outstanding saves in the first 15 minutes. Unfortunately, we could not keep them out for the whole match and Worthing were 3 down at the end of the first half, but could have easily been down by 10. It is surprising what difference 2 players make, but even when the Llamas attacked, Brighton seemed to have 2 players to our 1!

The girls went back on for the second half, invigorated by Ann’s secret weapon – jelly babies! The Llamas continued to play well as a team and Claire and Angelica created lots of attacking moves, but couldn’t quite convert them. Catherine, Romey and Gabby worked tirelessly in midfield, running back to defend when needed. Ann was helped in her endeavours by strong defending from Breanna and our 2 players from the 3’s, Gail Young and Mary Atkins. The girls all worked well, but couldn’t quite make up for the shortfall of 2 players, and began to tire in the second half.

The Brighton team attacked throughout, and scored another 4 goals in the second half, resulting in a final score of 7-0. All the girls should be commended on playing really well, never giving up and coming off the pitch with smiles on their faces! Even the Brighton supporters were impressed by their play, and Ann’s outstanding goalkeeping was the talk of the touchline! Well done girls, you really deserved your match teas! All the Llama mums who were watching were very encouraging and supportive – thank you Maybella and Sue! Let’s hope we can field a team of 11 next week.
