Worthing came into the match with one less player than previous weeks due to captain Ansell wanting to get more work out of his players and felt that 14 was 1 too many. Said Captain asked his chargers to focus their attention firmly to the final games in the lead up to Christmas with particular emphasis on not getting complacent. With this in mind, the mood was set in the camp to go out and get their hands on three points. However, it appeared the pre game talk was lost on the home side as the St Andrews faithful watched a slow start with Brighton jumping out of the blocks with more energy than their rivals. This early pressure was turned into a lead with Brighton converting a one on one with Worthing's keeper.
This clearly had an effect on the lads as they came very close to an instant reply with a ball just missed at the far post.
With further pressure exerted, it didn't take long for the boys to wind up, and their natural passing game started to take over. The first goal came from fast ball movement from the back line through to the midfield, where the trio from "down under" took over with a 3 on 1 first with defender and then a helpless goal keeper beaten by Paterson.... 1 - 1.
Next came what was described by club legend Johnny "the man" Massie as the goal of the season so far. The fluid movement and incisive attacking epitomised Worthing's new-found ability to cut defences to shreds with 2 touch hockey and nearly 12 pass phases with Pate` coolly finishing the ball from the top of the D.
Worthing continued this form with a 3rd goal to extend their lead as the play was moved from out wide on the right to an on-rushing Sewell who found Sawyer in the D who held the ball up and expertly found a running vice captain at the top of the D who finished the ball expertly into the bottom right corner in off both posts for his second goal of the season. This was Schiandro’s final contribution of the first half as he placed his head in the way of a lifted ball, which caught him on the forehead leaving Scarface with the third scar on his head in the last three weeks. With Sciandro and Gubbins off injured, Warner was brought on at left wing and Captain Ansell deputised at centre half and the home side went into half time 3-1 ahead.
Similar to the first half Worthing played very much up and down hockey with the highs being a classy drag flick by Warner after Lowe won a short corner along with a sharp piece of play linking great passing and a good finish at the far post by Marzy to extend their lead. The lows came in the form of a few too many counter attacks with Worthing pushing too far up the pitch and a clumsy challenge by J "to the Pizzle" Pease, which ended with Worthing going down to ten men for 5 minutes.
Binns made a few big saves during this period of play but not even his best keeping could stop Brighton's 2nd goal which came from another break away, much like last week against Holcombe where possession was conceded cheaply in the oppositions 25. The final whistle blew with Worthing winning the local derby 5-2 and although the main objective was achieved, there are still lessons to be learned in preparation for next week's crucial top of the table clash away at Lewes - the only side still undefeated this season.
