Worthing Men’s 1st XI            7         Long Sutton 1st XI         1

Bright and Early Sunday morning saw the Worthing Men’s 1st XI travel all the way up north to Lincoln to play Eastern Prem opposition - Long Sutton in the third round of the HA Trophy although upon arrival it became evident that their home pitch would be unplayable due to early morning floods. Fortunately, a spare slot was available at a pitch in Peterborough (30 minutes drive back whence we came!) although the surface was much more conducive to expansive hockey which is exactly what was played by both sides. Long Sutton came out dominating the early exchanges and after an unlucky rebound of keeper Wheeldon with the ball bouncing to the injector’s feet, Long Sutton took an early lead popping the ball over Wheeldon. Worthing then turned it up a notch and really put some pressure on the shaky Long Sutton defence. Craig Paterson found Worthing its first before a baseline chip from Michael Gubbins gave Worthing the lead at half time.

In the second half, Worthing really stepped it up and showed how good they can be with some solid and calm defence, skilful midfield and fantastic finishing. Dan Ginnaw scored two great goals with one coming straight out of the Harlem Globetrotters playbook as Alex Warner sent a great overhead flick from halfway into the ‘D’ as Ginnaw ran onto it and deflected it mid-air over the goalkeeper for a fantastic finish…. Alleyooop style!!. Rob Lowe, Chris Marr and Alex Warner also scored in the second half to give Worthing a great 7-1 win and the promotion into the next round of the Trophy where they will travel away again to play North Notts. A special mention should go to Tim Chipperfield who was called upon late on Saturday evening and agreed to make the long journey up and although playing a relatively short stint of the game, really contributed to the day’s success on his 1st team competitive debut. A massive thank you also goes to Chris Wheeldon who had the unenviable task of driving the minibus all the way up as well as contending with a rowdy bunch of alcoholics all the way back to Worthing!
