North Notts 1st XI 3
Submitted By: Chris Sciandro
After a long trip in Rob Warner’s shiny new van, we arrived in Mansfield late on Saturday evening, and after a big feed & getting some inspiration from ‘Cool Runnings’ we called it a night to prepare for the match.
The match started slowly, with neither team really taking control. However, North Notts were full of running, and after a quick counter attack they earned a penalty corner. A low flick beat Chris Wheeldon in goal, but Jimmy Pease on the line managed to get a foot in the way, giving Chris another chance to make a save. Unfortunately the penalty stroke was converted calmly and we were down early.
The deficit doubled not long after, despite the fact we controlled possession and territory, Notts were effective on the counter attack, and a ball hit across the circle found a player on the back post who deflected it home.
Worthing then completely dominated the rest of the half, with the midfield causing all sorts of problems for North Notts. A flurry of penalty corners were earned, but with Alex Warner carrying an injury that prevented him flicking, our usual set-up wasn’t its polished self. However luckily young Chris Lowin stepped up to fill the big man’s shoes and slotted home a flick in the bottom right corner.
After more pressure, Rob Lowe found himself with some space in the circle, and worked a shot as he turned on the ball, which found the corner to bring the scores level. At halftime, Worthing had dominated most of the play and felt confident they would wear North Notts down, but the score was still 2-2.
North Notts hit back early in the second with a penalty corner variation, leaving Worthing with some work to do to get back into the match. We kept working hard and another penalty corner lead to a variation to the right post where Grant Sawyer finished coolly, squaring the game up once again. A repeat of this variation led to the umpire awarding a stroke, before changing his mind after consultation with the other umpire, and downgrading it to another corner. An injured Al Warner stepped up but we were unable to convert. North Notts continued with their long hitting counter attack-style play, and had several good chances to retake the lead. However the sending off of the opposition skipper meant that Worthing had all the play for the last 5 minutes of the match, but Notts were strong in defence and were able to hold
them out. Golden goal extra time would decide this match. Notts started extra time with a chance that went wide, but Worthing built up a great passing movement, which resulted in Rob Lowe driving into the circle in the inside right lane. He then hit a shot across the face of the goal were Sawyer was lurking to get a delicate touch past the keeper for his second golden goal winner of the season. A big thanks needs to go to those guys who filled in for us, Adam Stephens, Chris Lowin, Cirdec Atkinson and a special mention to Chris Wheeldon for driving and Binnsy for running the sideline. Our thoughts go out to Adam who had his thumb broken early in the second half and is out for a month, hope it heals fast mate!
Well done to James Godber for another fantastic performance at the back, making many big tackles on their skilful forwards. Also Dan Ginnaw played well after he was forced to slot into right back after Adam’s injury (as we had no players left on the bench). Let’s hope we can win the next round in normal time fellas! Team: Chris Wheeldon, Adam Stephens. James Godber, Rob Lowe (1 Goal), Jimmy Pease, Dan Ginnaw, Craig Paterson, Grant Sawyer (2 Goals), Cirdec Atkinson, Chris Sciandro, Alex Warner, Chris Lowin (1 Goal)
