Worthing 1st XI vs Sevenoaks 2nd XI, played at St Andrews 13th February

3 – 3 draw

Team:   Chris Binns, James Pease, James Godber, Jason Collins, Matthew Sewell, Chris Sciandro, Grant Sawyer, Craig Patterson, Ben Burriss, Daniel Ginnaw, Robert Lowe, Matthew Ansell, Alex Warner

Worthing this season have profited from set pieces – namely short (penalty) corners.  This has got us out of trouble on a number of occasions and carved out a somewhat flattering, if not deserved score line in some of our games. Saturday’s game can be case in point, but it was short corners that also proved Worthing’s Achilles’ Heal - in both legs!

A few weeks ago Worthing beat Blackheath with a very convincing score line due to great finishing on short corners - albeit against a rather lacklustre goalkeeper. Against Sevenoaks we struggled to score from short corners and defend against them – both to our cost……….

Sevenoaks were known for being a team that played on confidence. Get the upper hand over them and their heads drop.  By being 2-0 up, one would have thought that this was true, but alas it did not.  Worthing scored from a short corner via Craig Patterson. His shot into the bottom right hand corner being a welcome relief, especially as Alex Warner was bench warming due to an annoying shoulder complaint. Worthing were really on fire, as from the re-start, Craig again showing his class, literary robbed the ball of a Sevenoaks play. He played the ball to Robert Lowe running in from the right wing . Taking on the keeper he calmly passed it left and wide of the goal for Ben Burriss to walk the ball into an empty goal. Simple, clean, link up hockey.

Worthing should have gone onto to really dominate, but with four back to back short corners and no outcome, you could hear the Sevenoaks side gaining confidence (and no doubt relief).  Their skills started to show and their large central midfielder, aided by his equally skilled team mates, pushed the game further up the field, penetrating the Worthing defence. Two short corners were awarded and Worthing were reminded of how to deal with short corners with two devastating and powerful drag flicks leaving the defence and goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

2 – 2 Halftime .

The second half was full of good passing from Worthing – if only they could get the ball out of their half. Poor distribution from the defence (or was it Sevenoaks’ pressure?) meant the normal free flowing and passing that Worthing come to expect wasn’t fully achieved. Good moments did come about, but some of the final finishing was woeful. A saviour seemed to appear in the shape of Craig Patterson scoring, but the details of which the writer has amnesia on. It also apparently snowed during the game, but my concentration was marking the Sevenoaks attack and not the weather. This lack of concentration may have been partially responsible for Sevenoaks’ third goal. Another short corner dispatched rudely into the goal, albeit along the ground! We have to be lucky that two other short corners were not stopped, otherwise the damage could have been a lot worse.

Our normal get out clause of scoring on short corners did not materialise. A number of the shots going wide and not bothering the keeper or defence.

Points dropped and disappointment. Horsham this week – what joy )c:
