Worthing 2nd XI 4 v 1 Brighton 2nd XI
Scorers: Ramiz, Burriss 2, B.Lock
Having defeated Chichester 2’s in the opening round the week before, a side we hadn’t beaten at 2nd XI level since the 1992 Sussex Cup Final, the 2nd XI marched on into their q-final showdown with current holders Brighton, knowing that a semi final with East Grinstead was the likely prize. About as tough as it gets in Sussex hockey for a route to the final!!
We started the game well, with lots of early pressure and a nice shape about the side that allowed us to soak up any Brighton attacks with relative ease. Arran Barker found a lot of space down the right and clearly had the beating of his man, causing Brighton to remain on the back foot. However, if you don’t convert pressure to goals, you are always liable to pay for it and that was the case as we went behind in the first half to a short corner, after several bits of sloppy play.
The goal didn’t unsettle the pattern of play and we continued to press for the equaliser with the introduction of the Australian Burriss from the bench. If anything our play had gone up a level with Jamie ‘Mungo’ Luke and Tim ‘Barts’ Barter snapping into tackles and turning over ball to set us away again. Eventually we levelled before half time when a quick free hit on the right from Tedmo, utilising the ‘self-pass’ ruling, was pushed forward to Ramiz allowing him to enter the D, round the keeper and finish from a tight angle.
With the introduction of young legs into midfield at half time, we continued to dominate, unlike the previous 2 weeks, where we had lost our 2nd half’s 3-0!! Chris Lowin and James Cook kept us going forward, but despite constant pressure, we continued to struggle to find a way through. With 10 minutes remaining, Burriss was introduced into the middle of the park, alongside Stuart Barter, with the deadly duo of Ramiz and Lock restored up top. A quick break, allowed Burriss to storm into to the D, take it wide of the keeper and smack home an excellent goal for 2-1. A couple of minutes later, Burriss found himself in the D again, and unleashed a flick over the keeper, high into the net for 3-1 and game over.
Brighton had nothing left in the tank, but Worthing were still hungry for more goals. In the final minute the gloss was put on the score line when Bryan Lock just a few yards out switched it left to Matt Ansell, which drew the keeper, only for Ansell to send it straight back to Lock, gifting him an open goal from 2 yards out. The mix of former 1st XI stalwarts like Lock, Massie, and Minchell with up and coming youngsters like Stuart & Tim Barter, Arran Barker, Chris Lowin and James Cook seems to be working well for the 2nd XI this season. We look forward to kicking off our league campaign against our own 3rd XI this Saturday, 1pm St Andrews.
Many thanks to Luke Helmer for umpiring, one of 3 games he did on Saturday - top, top bloke!!
