'DUNCAN AT THE DOUBLE'

A much changed Worthing 2's took to the field against a young Lewes outfit, who were going well in the league. A potential banana skin for sure. We are an affluent, pleasure seeking group in the 2's and this hit selection this week, with skiing, family golf days and trips to Old Trafford all needing to be squeezed in pre Xmas. Luckily we have some fairly handy 'go to' men in times of need. Mark Duncan made his 3rd appearance of the season, free of school duties, Andy Moore was parachuted in from Northern Ireland, sporting a Cyprian suntan and the comparatively pale Chris 'McLovin' Lowin was recalled from Winchester for his 2nd league outing of the season.

We started a bit hit and miss. Perhaps as expected, a few passes going astray, first touches not quite there. Mungo made sure we kept things tight though at the back. We eased into the game, with a goal from our first short corner. Switched to Tedmo, back to injector Ramiz, who batted it square (accidentally) to Duncs, whose shot was parried, then Ramiz put the rebound in. Routine 34(a)ii, if anyone cares to check the 2nd XI coaching manual. Unfortunately they equalised almost immediately with a rocket shot after we'd missed several opportunities to see the attack out.

This spurred us into action and 3 further goals followed before half time in a great passage of hockey, as good as any we have played this season. Arran cut one back for Duncs to smash home, Andy Moore, who was excellent throughout, had a shot blocked by a defender's foot on the line. Adam Stephens stepped up and cooly slotted home. Then another short corner and routine 34(b)i seemed the obvious option, slip right again, commit the keeper, then slip back left for Andy Moore to flick hard and low into the gaping net.

Half time at 4-1, job done really. Lewes came back strong in 2nd half, they scored from a short corner, but Duncs kept them at bay with his 2nd after a through ball from Lowin had been dummied by Moore. James Cook had another very good game in central midfield, especially from an attacking viewpoint, and the duracell bunny, making his debut from the 4th XI also caused Lewes problems down the right.

A good win to round off before the Xmas break.
