Worthing Men’s 4th XI            2                     Brighton Men’s 5th XI    3

After the sombre affair of a minute’s silence for the tragic events that befell Crowborough Hockey Club the week before the match started at a cracking pace. Brighton dominated early play and after sustained pressure they won a short corner within the first ten minutes. A fierce strike evaded both Keeper and left post man to make it one nil. This was followed by a second within 20 minutes from their centre forward who was left unmarked at the far post.

Worthing kept their heads up and it looked as though the tide was starting to turn. A couple of good chances were created but unfortunately they didn’t reach the back of the net. Brighton had a quick break away and this resulted in another penalty corner. They executed a perfect ‘injector’ routine from another fierce strike to leave the right post man, this time, with no hope. 3 down at half time.

At the team talk everyone was positive that we were still in the game and this proved to be the case. We came out, ‘all guns blazing’ and Brighton looked rattled. We dominated with quick passing and unselfish movement.

Our second penalty corner of the match resulted in a shot from John Herbert being blocked by the keeper only for Dave Green to sweep in the rebound. Charles (M.O.M.) McCall ran rings round their left back and several times threatened to score. Eventually he managed to pull one back from the dead ball line for Marc Taylor to finish in fine style. After that we ran it down both flanks with James and Sean on the left linking well to create more chances.

In the end the whistle beetroot us with the score at 3-2.

The best we have played all season. Perhaps with a regular keeper the result may have been different

Team: Dave Parsons (GK), Ant Fuest, Gareth Jones, Sean Ward, Charles McCall, Ian Penny, John Herbert, Gordon Starks, James Fyles, Dave Green (1 Goal), Jack Lawrence & Marc Taylor (1 Goal)
