Worthing Men’s 4th XI            6              Brighton Men’s 5th XI    3

Early pressure led to 2 short corners, which were not taken advantage of. Charles McCall caused the opposition problems with his speed down the right wing but the resultant crosses were not converted and it looked like the 4’s goal scoring drought was going to continue. Then, just as things we settling into the familiar pattern Tim Chipperfield broke from Defence and linked in mid field with Dave Green. Tim got the ball back and drove into the ‘D’, drew the keeper and squared for Martin Stevens, back in 4’s action after a spell in the 5s, to finish (1-0).

Further pressure and a speculative cross-field ball from the sideline by Gordon Starks was deflected by Marc Taylor into the path of Dave Green who shot at the edge of the ‘D’ under an out-rushing keeper (2-0). Another quick break from a free hit by Marc Taylor caught Brighton napping. He passed to Ian Penny who linked with Dave Green, got the return pass and shot on target. The keeper half stopped it and Charles McCall helped it trickle over the line (3-0). Tired defending let Brighton back into the Worthing half where they were awarded a penalty corner that they failed to convert. Just as Brighton were piling on the pressure Charles broke down the right and passed to Dave Green who rounded the keeper and squared the ball unselfishly to Martin for his second (4-0 Half time).

The second half continued in a similar manner and Chris Lee intercepted a Brighton player rushing out of defence, squared the ball to Ian Penny who found Dave Green in the ‘D’ who made it 5-0. At this point Worthing changed to a running, rather than passing game and the woes started. We conceded a short corner and Brighton finally had a goal (5-1). Worthing then had a period of pressure and the Brighton keeper made a couple of excellent saves. The pressure finally paid off when Dave Green Found Martin Stevens in the ‘D’. Martin’s shot was initially going wide but the keeper deflected it in (6-1).

Worthing had expended all of their energy with the sustained pressure and this led to a failure to clear from a succession of 16s and Brighton piled on the pressure. A penalty corner saw the scored change to 6-2. Yet another short corner given away by Worthing led to a third Brighton goal (6-3). The final few minutes were scrappy as both teams struggled to mount significant attacks and the final whistle blew. 6-3 on balance was a fair result and a welcome end to the goal scoring troubles of the 4th XI. Moral of the story… pass the ball and score the goals!
