Worthing Men’s 4th XI            4                      Crawley Men’s 3rd XI     1

 Submitted By: Dave Parsons

Worthing started strongly with good passing, spreading the play out to the wings. We won an early short corner which John Herbert slipped to David Green who’s deflected shot went to Marc Taylor for him to push into the net. We continued pressing and more short corners followed. From one of these David Green had a shot, which was well saved, but the ball went straight to John Herbert who flicked in on his reverse side.

After that it went downhill for the rest of the first half with Crawley putting us under increasing pressure, not allowing the free flowing passing that had led to the goals. Despite this the defence held firm with all four defenders making some timely interceptions.

The second half started as the first had ended with Worthing conceding a goal due to some poor defensive play. Crawley continued strongly, testing the keeper several time on the break. After soaking up the pressure Charles McCall got the ball down the right wing, cut in at the goal line and passed back to Marc Taylor who swept it in past a diving keeper. Crawley rebounded with a long period of sustained pressure and despite some defensive frailty Tom Gill, the keeper kept them out. In a moments respite Gordon Starks drove the ball down the left wing, played a timely one-two with David Green and his shot beat an outstretched keeper to slide in off the post. Crawley
