Worthing Men’s 4th XI            4                           East Grinstead 5th XI    2

Playing East Grinstead in the first league game of the season is never eagerly anticipated and for the 4th XI this was definitely the case.  However, it was EG who were sluggish to get going and Worthing started well, combining a solid midfield with an athletic attack.  Early opportunities fell to Marc Taylor who failed to convert them, but Worthing continued to press the E.G. area for at least ten minutes, seeking the first goal.  A well-stuck cross-field pass from Gordon found Marc Taylor on the edge of the area, and he took it into the D, wound up and struck the ball into the bottom corner.   With continued good possession and passing Worthing applied lots more pressure, preventing EG from getting into the game, and secured several short corners, including one where Prof unleashed a mighty flick that struck the keepers left post and flew away from an advancing attacker to our frustration.

Worthing doubled their score when Gordon Starks drove into the D, turned on a sixpence, went back out again and returned from a much tighter angle to shoot impressively past the keeper.  Either Worthing relaxed or E.G. stepped up their game, but they started stringing passes together and scored two goals before half time, both on the break.

After an encouraging half time talk from captain Dave and Prof, Worthing grabbed the initiative back a the start of the second half.  Worthing created more chances and scored again through Marc Taylor, who deflected a shot from Ants who had dribbled round several players to get to the D before passing to Marc.  Worthing kept pressing, and although E.G. had their moments, they were subdued by a strong and determined Worthing who really wanted the win.  We kept pressing for more goals and got yet another short corner.  Marc received the ball at the top of the D, passed to Alex Mason who unleashed a rocket of a shot that the keeper could hardly see passing him into the goal.

Prof was excellent with his distribution throughout the game, and everyone made a good contribution to the team’s performance.  Sean Ward was the man of the match with his excellent defending and great breaking runs down the left wing.
