Early pressure by Hailsham led to some chances but they failed to capitalise. Worthing’s Alex Mason broke out down the right wing and drove into the D to win a penalty corner. Martin Stevens injected and Marc Taylor shot low into the corner for the first goal (1-0). Worthing continued to pressure for some minutes and Marc Taylor had the best of the chances but this time shot over the bar. Hailsham then came back strongly at Worthing and a period of play when Worthing failed to clear their lines, led to an equaliser (1-1).
The game then slowed to a pedestrian pace as both teams played a game more akin to chess. Eventually the deadlock was broken when Marc Taylor did a pirouette (reminiscent of a Bolshoi exponent) on the edge of the Hailsham D and squared for Alex Mason to slot home (2-1). Half Time.
Worthing started the second half brightly and a short corner resulted within a few minutes. The ball was injected to Marc Taylor who slipped it to John Herbert. His reverse shot was swept in at the near post by James Fyles (3-1). All the time Worthing played a passing game they looked threatening but failed to convert several chances. Hailsham had the odd break but they failed to convert a short corner that resulted from one of them. One of the breaks saw all the Worthing defender back away from the ball carrier who promptly walked into the D and fired in a low shot past a surprised keeper (3-2). Some backchat by a Hailsham player and the ball was ‘moved up’ 10. The confusion in the Hailsham defence allowed John Herbert to pass quickly to David Green who slipped the ball to James Fyles who scored his second of the match (4-2). The match seesawed until the end with little goalmouth action. Final score 4-2. Many thanks to Kate Chipperfield and Luke Helmer for umpiring.
Man of the Match was Alex Mason for his unselfish play, particularly, in the second half by an odd vote from 2 goal James Fyles.
