Never rely on Google maps to give you a travelling time…or if you do take 20 minutes off. We arrived very early and stood around on a blustery afternoon in anticipation of an easier game than last week, the opposition being bottom of the league and 27 goals conceded in 6 games. Just before we started the predicted rain appeared out of the late evening sky and remained with us throughout. Despite the gloom Worthing started well and immediately had the opposition on the back foot. Marc Taylor scored the first with the help of John Herbert, closely followed by a second from Bob Catlow following a pass from Charles McCall on the right.
We continued strongly but Hailsham had several quick breaks which highlighted some defensive frailty. For a while it was end-to-end stuff more akin to ping-pong than hockey and it was during this period that Worthing broke to win a penalty corner that was decisively converted but John Herbert. Before half time Hailsham pulled one back when their striker was left open at the far post.
The second half continued with the tit-for-tat exchanges and again Worthing’s finishing was superior with John Herbert and Marc Taylor adding a 4th and 5th goal respectively. A period of more sustained Hailsham pressure ensued and resultant short corners were well defended, especially by John Herbert on the left post. Charles McCall went on a solo run only to be thwarted by an out-coming keeper near the top of the D.
The final whistle blew on 22 drowned rats and it was only then that we heard that the Hailsham Ladies had cancelled their 12:00 o’clock game earlier in the week and we could have possibly had that slot – in the daylight and dry weather!
A good team performance under difficult conditions in a game which was not as one sided as the final score suggests.
Many thanks to Luke Helmer for travelling all that way to umpire.
