What a difference a week makes. Last week 110% effort from everyone. This week…oh dear. Worthing started very sluggishly, possibly due to the 10am start. They woke up, but by then Horsham had the upper hand and poor marking led to us conceding a sloppy goal. After more sustained pressure from Horsham Gordon Starks made a timely interception, drove at the D and crossed. The ball looped up off a defender’s stick and fell just inside the opposite side of the D where Dave Green controlled and lifted it over the diving keeper (1-1). This gave Worthing renewed vigour and we again came close when Ian Penny’s shot hit the post. The rebound came out to Gordon Starks who hit the other post before it was cleared. Horsham then played some ‘team hockey’ and passing right round the back, found Worthing static in defence and one of the unmarked players shot past Tom in Goal. (2-1 half time)

John Herbert failed to make the re-start due to a hamstring injury.

It was an even start to the second half until a non-taken 16 (an air-shot by Marc Taylor) led to total confusion and Horsham capitalised and walked the ball past several static defenders and into the goal (3-1). This seemed to knock the remaining stuffing out of Worthing who then capitulated in fine style. Slack marking can be attributed to all 3 of Horsham’s’ remaining goals with Tom being left exposed against multiple attackers. Final score 6-1 down and very disappointing given the previous weeks efforts. Martin gets man of the match for doing more running than several others combined despite being the oldest player on the pitch.

Many thanks to Dave Clark of Littlehampton for umpiring
