Worthing Men’s 4th XI            3                 Littlehampton 1st XI     8

After an even opening few minutes the deadlock was broken when LA converted a penalty corner. Worthing were slow to the ball and this helped LA to get a second a little later from open play. Just when Worthing appeared to be getting back into the game and were pushing hard for a goal LA caught them on the break from a corner and made it 3-0.

The game then settled into 10 more minutes of even play with little penetration by either side. Worthing had a short corner but Ian Penney’s flick drifted inches wide. LAS were dangerous on the break and forced another short corner, which was saved in the air, on the line by Gareth Jones. Long and short corners followed and LA piled on the pressure as Worthing failed to be first to the ball.

From an undercut Worthing penalty corner TT took a ball on the head and some claret flowed. While TT waited on the sideline for the ambulance Worthing took advantage of his absence and Gordon latched onto a long ball to slot past a diving keeper. 3-1 at half time.

Worthing went for all out attack too early in the second half and left Gareth exposed at the back. With 3 men for him to mark the odd were that LA would score…and they did. Worthing failed to mark a succession of players in the following LA attacks and they made it 5-1 with ease. Yet more sloppy defending left an LA player free at the top of the D and he roofed his shot to make it 6-1. Marc Taylor gave away a flick and Colin Warner made no mistake, 7-1. Worthing kept pressing forward and when LA failed to clear Dave Green passed to Charles McCall and Martin Stevens tapped in at the far post, 7-2. John Herbert lobbed a ball downfield to Martin who took it one handed at the top of the D and shot one-handed under an advancing keeper. (7-3). TT refused to go to hospital for stitches and came back on looking like a mummy. Further chances came and went and LA broke and won a short corner. The resultant strike hit an advancing Tom on the thigh and went in to make the final score 8-3 to LA. Gordon missed a sitter when the LA keeper pulled off a remarkable double save and the game fizzled out in the last few minutes.
