With the league won and the winning streak over we were really just playing for the fun this week. With pretty much half the regular side unavailable, poached or emigrated we were topped up with a mixture of youth and experience from the 6 XI. We started the very positively; letting in two during the first 10 minutes at which point Captain Dan decided that the 3-2-3-2 formation wasn’t working and dropped back into defence, Some great running from John on the right ended with us pulling one back and this inspired the rest of the team to get into first gear and we managed another. Ben, Connor, James, Roger and Luke all put in an excellent work rate against the ‘robust’ Brighton team and we went into half time level at 3 each (Brighton could have got a fourth but Captain Dan organised the marking so that only ex Worthing player JC had the opportunity to shoot, we miss you Barney!).
You would be forgiven for thinking that the second half was one-way traffic but this was far from the case. Stalwart defending from Robin and John kept the Brighton hoards at bay for a while and despite making some great saves to keep us in the game poor Joe didn’t have a chance when we left him with a three on one. The final score line really just reflects the fact that in their home pitch Brighton put away more of their chances than we did, still it’s a win for us because Brighton can now come second in our league which mans we’ll save ourselves a trip to Eastbourne next year. Thanks to Ann for umpiring in the very wintry weather and as always to head cheerleader Patrick.
