A late start at Eastbourne this week for the Men’s 5th XI, push back at 16:30 in the dark and the rain which was getting persistantley harder throughout the game, Eastbourne pushed back and Worthing started hard, getting within scoring distance almost immediately, alas the scoring was not to be opened by us but by an Eastbourne attacker with an excellent flick into the top scorer leaving Joe with no hope of reaching it. We kept our heads and within minutes we pulled it back to 1-1. Eastoburne pulled back into the lead with a second goal from a short corner, but we still kept shape, again quickly levelling out the scores. Failing on the first two shorts but third time lucky and into the lead 3-2, and then an impossible base line shot reversed from Aaron crossing the goal and clipping the inside post, into the lead 4-2, wrapping it up with a clear shot form Mark. Half time 5-2
An encouraging team talk at half time with no real faults to find, to continue how we were, defending on the back line with Dave and Jamie picking up anyone that managed to get past Guns in centre mid, with coverage down the wings also the shape worked. We were scoring more than conceeding, good enough for me.
After the 5 minutes, we were cold and wet, the rain was getting harder, tensions raised resulting in a couple of green cards for Eastbourne, we had tired and lost that first half shape, Eastbourne won a short and scored even Dave couldn’t stop it on the goal line 5-3, we couldn’t let this slip away, tactically subbing in and out to rest tired players. Then a break away from James Fyles saw that comfortable lead restored,
The game the became scrappy, the rain got harder and a puddle even started forming on the pitch. Movements from end to end but to no avail. Final score 6-3.
Thanks to Vice Captain Al Scott for umpiring for us rather than playing this week.
Worthing 5th XI now sit 6 points clear at the top of the division with the win over Eastbourne pushing them into 3rd place with Brighton (Our next opponent) moving in 2nd place for a top of the table clash a second week in a row, however with a slightly more comfortable lead.
