DIVISION 3 CHAMPIONS ‘09-‘10
Worthing went into the game knowing that a win over Southwick would ensure we would be enough points clear and could only be caught on goal difference (if we lost our other 4 games). The morning started bright and early at 09:30 for a knock around and a team picture. Southwick arrived sporting some extra edition that when we had beaten them 10-0 in the first half of the season “a couple of 2nd and 3rd XI players”. Worthing had the team talk and play began. We looked sloppy, nothing like the previous week with an identical team against a strong opposition and won 11-3. But as play continued I realised why, because of these extra editions that Southwick had brought over we had a game on our hands and I think it is a credit to the team that we kept them out and a clean team sheet. Worthing went into half time 2-0 up with some good work from Dan Lock and Aaron Chapman. After a productive talk and a few mouthfuls of Port Worthing went back out determined to win, 2 goals not being a comfortable cushion. We pushed up and defended hard. More goals came from Dan and Aaron got another 2 goals to make his third hat trick in three weeks. The final whistle blew and game won 5-0 to Worthing. With a 48 lead in goal difference and if nothing else only needing to draw one of the last four Worthing celebrated with champagne provided by Dave Lock as it was his last match.
But we only had to wait till the afternoon to find out if we had won the league. Second place Eastbourne 5th XI were playing Third place Brighton 6th XI, a win over Eastbourne would guarantee we were home clear, not that they needed it but after a message to old skipper James Collett (now playing for Brighton) promising a couple of crates of beer if they did win, we waited.
Brighton 7 Eastbourne 2 job done, league champions and 3 of Brighton goals coming from J.C. himself an added bonus. We owe them some beers now. Also thanks to Worthing Men’s 6th XI for having beaten them the week before.
And finally to say goodbye to Dave Lock as he departs off to the Ukraine, a valuable member of the team at centre back he will be missed.
Thanks to umpire Benjie
