Worthing Men’s 5th XI            10                                          Southwick Men’s 4th XI            0

Worthing travelled to Portslade to play Southwick on a very open to the elements pitch, excellent when there are strong winds and driving rain, not to mention the sand stinging our legs as it drifted.

Didn’t think through winning the toss and opted for push back meaning Southwick changing ends leaving us playing into the wind. A rather different team this week due to limited availability with some of the 6th XI helping out to boost numbers and Rollo too, was denied the use of Bryan Lock at selection due to the 2’s not having a game, but Dan & Bryan up front would be a bit much for a 5th XI team. We started without the usual ability of linking passes, but the wind against us was not helpful moving down the pitch. In between being pelted by sand we got ourselves together and eventually the scoring was opened by Dan Lock, followed

by one from Dave Raynor then a further from Dan Lock, Southwick only getting one chance closed down by the defence and easily stopped by Joe Isaacs. Half time came 3-0.

Second half and then the rain came, driving across the pitch, so glad Southwick had chosen to swap ends for the first half.

With the rain and wind behind us the goals started rolling in, the passes going where they were meant to, I even had a run up the pitch from defence ending up on the edge of the D though no assist gained. 2 more goals for Dan Lock, another for Dave Raynor, one from Paul Thornton being on the post at exactly the right time to deflect the ball in. A short was won and up steps Rollo to grab a goal for himself and Luc proving his worth being moved from the Tigers getting his 2nd goal of the season and one for Dave Lock too!

Final score 10-0 to Worthing, think Joe made a couple of saves in the game, first clean sheet of the season, 7th win out of 7 games and now top of Division 3, on goal difference, Eastbourne level on points, we play a floodlit game away at 16:30 next week, could be interesting. Big thanks to Ann Q for umpiring in the horrible weather and with her game starting 45 minutes after we finished back in Worthing.

Captains comments: Well done to all the 5th XI players and other who have played for us, lets keep this roll going. East Grinstead today.
