A cracking game for Worthing. Firstly please forgive the lack of names I only know 4 of the players. The others where juniors that have come up through the development sides. Playing out of my usual position at right back I actually had to run, well jog, ok then walk fast. Luckily for me these youngsters did enough running which meant I could zonal mark. Robin and Nigel brought the average age down a few years and as always played with the skill you can only gain with over half a century of experience. Robin and his eye of the tiger picked the ball effortlessly from the opposition like candy from a baby, while Nigel controlling the game and holding us together proved to be impenetrable as the sweeper.
With a strong and aged defence we look sturdy and confident and with Connor in goal keeping us on our toes on paper we had an impenetrable shield protecting the goal. These youngsters played with the skill and execution of a 1stXI team, I was amazed. They not only passed the ball they ran on to receive and pass back. It was textbook hockey. They are a credit to whoever coaches them. Chris (I think) played midfield and held the attacking force together like he’d been playing for years. Bobcat on the sideline kept refreshing the forwards with the subs, keeping us on top of the game. Within the opening minuets these guys
the opposition and calmly placed it into the back of the net. From then it was open season. Blondie playing right half and another one on the wing ripped apart their defence to help our forwards to yet another goal. Not one of the goals was a fluke or a gift from the opposition. Each goal was played back and forth around the players waiting for an opportunity to score. Half time was upon us, a positive and encouraging talk from Nigel and a few tactical changes from Bobcat saw us looking to score a bucket full in the second half. I by this point was grateful of the sub that replaced me. After saving 2 short corners with the “STICK” my toe was turning a funny colour and needed a rest. Despite our lead the team didn’t go all out and try shooting from every position possible they carried on much like the first half. Aaron Chapman helping to create chances and grabbing a couple goals for himself. This again saw us scoring a couple more. Nigel taking the short corners punished the opposition by scoring 2 (I think) from a powerful yet precise shot into the goal.
The over all performance was that of a team that played, as a team! Refreshing to see. A definite boost for the coach and parents that run the Development sides. Proving that the development league works. More help is still needed as juniors out number the help. Team: Connor Allam (GK), Nigel Parker (1 Goal), Robin Carr, Roger Beaney (1 Goal), Alex Weddell, Chris Lee, Jake High (1 Goal), Jack Guy, Alex Mason (1 Goal), Ben Harvey, Robert Teear, David Lock, Aaron Chapman (2 Goals) & Dan French Manager: Bob Catlow!
