Worthing Men’s 6th XI   3                        Eastbourne 5th XI         5

 Submitted By: Bob Catlow

An excellent performance by a depleted 6th X1, missing 3 key veterans, but our bunch of juniors stepped up to the mark with a collective 1st rate effort. Eastbourne put out an experienced squad of 13, including 5 of their most experienced Vets plus a selection of older 18-20 year olds.

Although going quickly 1-0 down, Worthing responded with 3 good attacks and then a penalty flick awarded when an Eastbourne player stopped the ball on the line with his foot. Early riser Alex nonchalantly stepped up and slotted in the bottom corner. 1-1.

The experience of Eastbourne then told as, despite a string of great saves from Connor Allam, we went 4-1 down by halftime.

A quick second half rearrangement worked effectively as Capt Beaney (and his band!) took a hold. Roger dropped back in midfield to eradicate their linking strikers effectiveness. Jack Guy and Jake High took control of both midfield flanks, and Alex Mason took dominance in midfield. Alex Weddell and Ben Harvey on both wings roamed in conjunction with Martin Stevens up front to cause panic in the Eastbourne defence. A further goal from Alex Mason and a first ever hockey goal for Alex Weddell, against a single reply from E/b, saw us win a second half 2-1, but lose gallantly 5-3 against the league leaders.

Also a mention for our 2 senior full backs. Andrew Tomes and Howard Wakeling, both making their seasons debuts with solid defensive contributions, against a couple of quick footed wingers.

Man of The Match.  Has to be ALEX MASON. Great Club team player. Was supposed to be playing 4th X1. Dragged himself out of a deep sleep to bolster the 6th XI. Dominated midfield. Scored the p. flick and a second. Probably a 1st team player in a few years.
