Crowborough Crows 2
Submitted By: Ian Helmer
Although the result didn't go in our favour the Tigers can be happy in the knowledge that they were by far the better team and played the better hockey. The first half was mainly the Tigers pushing for a goal and a very good Crowborough keeper keeping them in the game. It was well into the second half before Sam Gill broke the deadlock and the Tigers took a deserved lead. The two Crowborough adults had one game plan, which was to smash the ball as hard as they could up the middle of the field and try and reach the lad they had camped out on our goal line. As the game progressed their adults took to smashing the ball into the D from the 25 as hard as they could and also flattening Alex Minchell in their desperation to score, for which the adult was green carded. They did manage to score twice but what they taught their juniors is beyond me and a reading of the spirited guidelines (adults not to smash the ball into the D), together with a look at the email from the league regarding contact with juniors might be a good idea. I also spoke to one of their parents who was questioning all the umpiring decisions (wrongly) which I find particularly galling as they asked us to supply two umpires and then played with two adults. On a positive note Kieran O’Brian, fresh up from the Wolves was outstanding and Adam Hart will play a big part in next year’s team. My thanks to Tim Chipperfield who does understand the concept of the development league and umpires Mike Shreeve and Luke Helmer
