After a disappointing start to the season against Brighton and a new keeper playing his first game for the club, there was a slight feeling of foreboding as we headed for last years league winners Lewes.
Kathy Minchel and myself watched in stunned amazement as the Tigers ran rings around their opponents for the first fifteen minutes and had numerous chances before Alex Watkins finished a fine move with a superb shot from an acute angle on the left. Lewes then tried to apply pressure but our defence were solid and the shots they had were covered by debutant keeper, Josh House, until against the run of play Lewes had a one on one with Josh and just squeezed it home. Far from heads dropping Ellis Wooley led the fight back and Alex Minchel finished a lovely move down the right when the ball was pulled back to the top of the D and 2-1 was the score. Sam Wookey and Leo French were excellent in mid field and Luc Hinton distributed the ball well at sweeper and it took some fine saves from the Lewes keeper to keep them in the game.
More of the same was the half time team talk and that was what we got. Again we just couldn't get the ball in the net. To their credit Lewes had some talented players and Sam Gill was outstanding at right back, making us feel tired just watching the ground he covered and the skill he displayed. Against the run of play Lewes broke and punished one of the few Worthing mistakes to make it 2-2 and shortly after finished a short corner with a drag flick out of the Alex Warner collection 3-2 Lewes. Dalton Tessier showed wonderful skills up front and tormented the Lewes defence but it just wasn't to be.
However result aside the TEAM were superb today and if they continue to improve through the season will provide an excellent crop of players to the adult divisions.
Big thanks to John Massie and umpire Luke Helmer.
