On Sunday our U14 Girls team played at Broadbridge Heath against Horsham U14 girls. This is a ‘friendly’ fixture to give the girls a chance to play against teams in their own age group, which they rarely get to do in the Sussex Development League, which goes up to U16. I had a relatively young squad (average age 11) and no substitutes were available due to last minute illness, so the girls would have to work hard. The Horsham girls looked bigger and physically stronger and they had 14 in their squad so our girls looked a little nervously at the opposition. Sam Wookey, one of our youngsters was umpiring, and we also had the luxury of some spectators one of which was Alan Ross, himself a very accomplished umpire, who kindly came to support the girls. Worthing needn’t have been worried as they started confidently keeping possession and ensuring the passes went to our players.
Some lovely passing moves by Jennifer Ross-Thomas to Emily Bromley-Ellis (playing as a sweeper) to Tia Freeman and Gabby Rudrum in mid-field led to some early attacks on the Horsham goal. Although younger, our girls were clearly more experienced and the ball rarely ventured out of the Horsham half in the first 20 minutes. Some great play led to goals by Lauryn McDavitt and Gabby Rudrum, who together with Tia and Rachel Mangan were controlling mid-field. Ellie Fuest, playing her first ever match for Worthing, was at left mid and was involved in several lovely passing moves, which resulted in shots on goal. When the Horsham team did break through, Emily Bromley-Ellis, Jennifer Ross-Thomas, Honor McKenna-Preston and Florence Mason did a sterling job in defence and our goalkeeper, young Stevie Doolan, did not have much to do in the first half. Worthing earned a myriad of short-corners which were, sadly, not converted, but which kept the home team under pressure. In the second half, Horsham re-grouped and did manage more attacks on the Worthing goal, one of which was a nicely worked move that resulted in a well-taken goal. However, just as Horsham got back in to the game the Worthing girls upped their game once more and wave after wave of attacks resulted in some superb goals by Lauren McDavitt and Jessica Ross-Thomas. Florence Mason, also a recent addition to the Worthing squad, played well in defence and then continued her great work in mid-field with some nice passes and excellent defensive tackling. Ellie Fuest, having played in mid-field and defence was now moved to right forward and was involved in some great attacks in the last 10 minutes, having a shot hit the post and providing the final pass to Lauren to score her 5th goal of the day (Lauren you owe the team a jug of squash in case you forget!). Well done to all the girls and a big thank you to Horsham for hosting the match.
