Worthing Hockey Club Ladies 1st XI continued their perfect league record, notching up their 17th league victory and surpassing a hundred goals in the process. A restructured team due to injury & availability allowed the youngsters to form the heart of the midfield and they were quickly into their stride and allowing Worthing to take an early lead with a surging run from captain Gemma Taylor linking up with Charlotte Waters who netted the first of her three.
A lull ensued in the tempo of Worthing's game with the second goal arriving only after another powerful individual run by Gemma who netted the first of her two with a neatly taken finish. Worthing continued to apply pressure on the Brighton goal which eventually paid off on the stroke of half time with Andie Chambers converting a well worked short corner, smashing the ball home and claiming Worthing's 100th league goal of the season to boot.
After a stern half time team talk from manager Kathy Minchell urging a higher work rate, Worthing started the second half in a more assertive manner pushing Brighton back and leaving Mandi Stevens (goalie) as a mere spectator. The pressure eventually told with Worthing being awarded another short corner, Formstone & Chambers combining well for Chambers to net her second. Brighton responded well with a passage of play in the Worthing half culminating in a goal, but this merely spurred Worthing into another gear, with Waters netting her second in an immediate response.
Patient, intellectual hockey ensued with good ball movement, playing the ball around the back with speed and fluidity which lead to two rapid fire goals, one being a well taken reverse stick flick by Taylor quickly followed by Waters rounding off her hat-trick.
Kala Groves currently on form continually pressurised & challenged Brighton & was unfortunate not to net a reverse stick hit in the first half deservedly earned man-of-the-match. Another great team performance & a step closer to an undefeated league season.
