Worthing Ladies became 2011/12 champions of Sussex Premier League on Saturday following a convincing 4-1 victory over second-placed Horsham 2s. The win achieves promotion into South 3B League next season. The league leaders required 2 points from the remaining 3 games and were therefore aware that a victory against promotion rivals, Horsham, would secure an early title. Following the disappointment last season of narrowly missing out on promotion on the last day of the season, Worthing were determined not to make the same mistake and confidently took this game into their control during the early stages. A well worked passing manoeuvre, saw the ball worked through midfield into Taylor, who flicked across to Chambers, who then tapped into Waters waiting to slot the ball home for 1-nil. It was not long before Chambers herself made the score sheet by slamming in a close range shot. Worthing went into the break 2-0 up and tasting victory. They started confidently after half time and continued to display the strength that had kept them at the top of the table all season. Horsham however were not giving up and were applying the pressure, testing the Worthing defence when they could. Heather Vaughan was solid at the back and prevented several Horsham attacks with some strong challenges. Louise Saward earned her man-of-the-match status by equally putting in some strong tackles and moving the ball up into midfield. Worthing were using their set routines well and it was not long before Pickett slotted Worthing ahead for 3-0 through a penalty corner left slip. Horsham made it 3-1 soon after but goalkeeper Claire Goodyear was stopping most of the shots which came near her, which the defence was then sweeping away. Chambers made it 4-1 towards the end with her second of the game that gave Worthing time to count down the minutes to full-time and celebrate their victory, a result of some hard work throughout the season. Worthing now have two games remaining in the league to achieve the goal of a clean sweep in the league.

Their unprecedented league record so far is; Played 16, Won 16, Goals for 97, Goals against 14, Difference + 83. Points 48.

It is proposed that they will be presented with the Sussex Premier Trophy on Saturday 17th March at 11.15am, just prior to the start of their last home game of the season v South Saxons at St Andrews School.

On Saturday 31st March at 11.30am, Worthing will play Eastbourne 1s at St Andrews for a place in the Sussex Cup Final.
