Not the weather the Worthing ladies were hoping for on the last league game of their record breaking winning season. Saturday morning brought more than its fair share of rain but as ever, this was not enough to put off their ardent supporters. Saturday morning saw the Worthing ladies lift the Sussex Premier League Trophy, something not to be missed. After touching presentations were made by Richard Atkinson and Cedric Atkinson, the trophy was lifted and then it was back to business. Although Worthing had already won the league, they were determined to win every game in the league and were not about to let South Saxons get in their way.
Despite Worthing having their target in sight, they struggled to play with 100% motivation. Even when South Saxons lost a player to injury, Worthing failed to capitalise until the 30th minute, which fittingly saw Captain Gemma Taylor slot one past the ever-nimble Saxons keeper. After a stern talking to from coach Kathy Minchell, Worthing came out with somewhat renewed energy. Shelley Formstone got back on the score sheet after a stint away, again, playing the goal around the keeper who was saving all direct shots. A breakaway goal against the run of play was nicely put away by a Saxons midfielder. This finally frustrated Worthing sufficiently into playing their hockey. Worthing did what they do best, stringing together sequence after sequence of fluid passes to score 3 times in 9
minutes, the first from talented striker Charlotte Waters and 2 goals in 2 minutes from bright star Lily Ross-Thomas. Another young talent Hannah Saward scored with a lovely strike on the final whistle to make 18 wins, 110 goals scored and only 16 conceded.
