Earlier in the week we had feared that we would not be able to raise a team but thanks to Bob Catlow's contacts and Howard Wakeling's rank at Worthing Hospital, we travelled east with 12 players. Luke Fuest and Andy Hastings debuted and have already been offered contracts.
Despite a scratch side we were totally dominant in the first half and should have scored enough to call a declaration. However, although we hit the post, had shots cleared off the line and forced their keeper into desperate saves, we just could not score.
Our custodian only touched the ball 3 times in this half although 2 of these touches involved a double save just before the break. Half-time 0-0.
The second half was more even but we still had chances. Half way through this period Crowborough scored a spectacular goal and soon after added a second. We still had changes but could not finish. John Edwards and Robin Carr did sterling work in defence and Howard Wakeling ran miles. It was good to see Andy Tomes again and Bob Catlow kept the forwards going.
The 2 umpires, Sam Wookey and his Crowborough counterpart were excellent. Many thanks.
Next week we entertain Crawley at St Andrews at 2.30. This will be our last home game.
PS congratulations to all the Tigers/Wolves who have been selected for Sussex. Those who are disappointed not to be selected must keep practising and following advice.
