A great week’s junior hockey was finished off by a victory from the Tigers to complete wins for all the young teams. The Tigers came up against a strong Horsham team but started well again moving the ball around the pitch really well, this stretched to opposition defence but they held strong and our attacks were broken down well forcing our midfield and defence to be awake and cut out the counter attacks. The game remained even for most of the first half and the only goal came from Robbie after the midfield worked the ball well around the adult and the rest of the defence. Luc Hinton helped out with umpiring in the first half and took over the defensive role in the second and a solid performance from the whole team and the Wolves that helped kept the other team off the scoreboard leaving Josh only having to make a few saves. Overall a great close game and good experience for the players.

This week’s game was against a strong Chi team who from the start looked like they were going to put our team under a lot of pressure. They came out the blocks fast and made our defence work hard for the first ten minutes but as usual we held strong and Travis kept the ball out of the goal with some solid saves. The team fought back well and evened out the game and began to strike back with some good periods of passing from everyone and good runs from Adam, this all lead to a goal which was finished well by Ollie Wakeling for his first of the season and immediately you could see his confidence boosted with a great performance for the rest of the game. The game remained even but the lads kept the ball speed and quality of passing high and eventually the hard work paid off with a second goal to add to the tally, unfortunately all this hard work went to waste with a very questionable and unbelievable decision at our 16 before we had even taken it, their central attacker took it off our defence and walked it into the goal. To prove that the team isn’t put down by incidences like this we pushed hard and showed our quality and Adam added to his increasing goal tally to take us 3-1 up. This seemed to wake the opposition up and they piled on the pressure and blocked us into our own half and managed to get a few short corners which we defended well to keep them out, eventually at the end of the game from open play they got a reverse shot off on goal and our team stopped as they are banned but it ended up in the goal and was allowed, which took it to 3-2 to round off an interesting game and a good win which we deserved.

Even though we were out matched more than expected all the players put in a great performance and hopefully learnt a lot from the experience, there were a lot of positive periods of play from all. A great defensive performance held back the opposition attack for most of the game but the goals came when we were caught on the break and fatigue had set in. Even though we went a couple of goals down we kept the pressure up to score the first goal and a second opportunity arose after a good save from the opposition keeper deflected to Max who held his nerve well and slotted the second goal in which was a great boost to his confidence, hopefully this kind of positive confidence boosting play will continue into the rest of the season.

The first game back after Christmas wasn’t the best performance from the team but started and ended with good periods of play, it was just the middle that probably showed the effects of all the chocolate and turkey consumed along with a lack of training. The game started well with both teams equally matched, settling down nicely with chances at both ends. Crawley were the ones who took their chances and slotted in their first from a short corner. Unfortunately most of the lads let their heads go down and didn’t look like they wanted to get back in the game, a few remained hopeful especially Gavin Walker who had a great game and was unlucky not to finish a few chances. The second goal came in the second half and was a good goal; the ball was fired in from a sideline and finished well by the opposition attacker. This seemed to wake the team up and they began to attack more and missed a few chances that on other days would have gone in but it was all a bit too late in the game. Good wakeup calls for the lads, all games need every effort from all players. A big thanks and congratulations to Adam Hart who received his Level 1 umpires award after umpiring the game.

With Wolves Luke Binstead, Ben Childs & Max Holloway (still bubbling after scoring his first goal last week against Crawley) mixing with the Tigers this week the scene was set for a tough match against a well versed and slick Mid-Sussex squad. The match started at a great pace and the Colts were the ones applying the early pressure and Brad House, Luke Helmer and Jack Cooper had to work hard in defence for much of the first 15 minutes, aided by some good saves from Josh House, struggling with a pulled muscle in goal. After repelling the early attacks the Tigers, with Ross Fletcher, Kieran O’Brien, Ben Childs and Ciaran Dinning in midfield spread the play nicely to Adam Hart and Aaron Aitman in the forward positions. Some good attacks were saved by the Colts goalie and several shots just missed. With Luke Binstead coming on in defence and putting in some great tackles and Callum Rudrum & Ben Childs firming up the midfield the Colts still kept up the pressure on the Worthing goal and the deadlock was only broken through a very fast move out of defence with the ball arriving on Aaron Aitman’s stick, who immediately homed in on the Colts goal, wrong footed the goalkeeper and slotted the ball home from an extremely acute angle for his fourth goal of the season. 1-0 Tigers. Mid-Sussex tried to level before half time but the Tigers held out to finish he half 1-0 ahead.

The second half continued in the same vein with attacks from both sides and some good play from Mat Isaacs, Ben Gosden and Kieran O’Brien leading to Max Holloway nearly slotting another goal with his shot just going to the left of the goal. Worthing had other chances from some short corners but they were sadly not converted in to goals. Mid-Sussex never stopped trying and although Josh made some great saves, with two shots rebounding off his right post Mid-Sussex realised it may just not be their day. Towards the end of the match an incident in the Tigers D looked to have resulted in a P-flick with the Worthing home crowd thinking that was what the umpire signalled!! Our hearts were in our mouths when it transpired that the signal was actually for a lifted ball by one of the Colts and Worthing were able to clear their lines and win the match.

The match was extremely exciting all the way through with a very high standard of play from all the boys and it was a great that the Tigers managed to defend their slender lead throughout the second half and finish the match 1-0. Thanks to Ann Q and Sam Wookey for umpiring, Sue Gosden for making the tea and thanks also to the Mid-Sussex boys and their manager for playing their part in an extremely entertaining match.

Having a cold early morning game I would have expected the lads to be a bit sluggish against a very tall opposition side. This wasn’t the case and we were the first out of the blocks moving the ball at a good pace around the pitch, it was also nice to see the drills we had practiced in training that week shining through in the game. Some players who wouldn’t normally look backwards to go forwards did exactly that and when they ran into trouble simply moved the ball back and across the pitch to spread the play, after a while we managed to stretch the opposition defence allowing Ben to get his first of the game. The pressure was kept high straight after the push back and again the pressure was too much for their defence and within fifteen to twenty minutes Ben had slotted away another and Jack Dunn put himself on the scoreboard as well. At this point I had to sub myself off due to the new ruling, this is when the lads discovered what it was like not to have an adult at the back and it showed that they were not used to it, the opposition capitalized on this and we unfortunate not to score in the first half.

Throughout the second half they bombarded our D with crosses from all angles forcing Travis to make some reaction saves keeping them off the scoreboard until the last ten minutes. The pressure was too much for the defence and a good low shot went in bottom corner bringing them closer to our score, this seemed to wake their defence up and every attack we mounted was thrown straight back at our defence and with five minutes to go the score became 3-2 with another good finish from their striker. The team managed to hold it together and keep them out until the finial whistle to secure the win.

This week’s game was more like ping pong than hockey with both teams evenly matched and counter attacking for pretty much the full 70 minutes which forced both teams to be constantly aware of another attack. On quite a slow pitch we realised that short passing and the odd longer ball to those upfront was the way forward, even if those upfront were having a chat with their school friends on the other team and not ready for the pass, Ollie and Callum may have been guilty of this a few times. The flightless birds scored first when a long pass went through the middle of the pitch to their centre forward, who passed our defence and forced a good save from Josh who was unlucky as the ball spun off his pads for an easy finish. The lads were a bit disheartened but our defence held strong, with a solid performance from Tom Penny at right back, a great player who has the potential to go far from the performances I have seen. After forcing some saves from the opposition goal keeper the pressure paid off and a scrappy period of play in the opposition D somehow the ball found its way in the back of the goal and the lads picked their game up as they sensed they could get a second, which is exactly what they did with an almost identical period of play in front of goal leading to our second from Ollie to round off the goals for the game. A great close game which the youngsters have gained a lot from, which is exactly what Richard and I are aiming to get from the games this season.
