The lower temperatures did not deter the scoreline however as the team notched up a scorching eleven goals. With news of Chichester 1s pulling out of South League above, there were expectations of a mixed strength opposition but this did not hold back proceedings with Formstone opening the account early on from a Chambers pass across the keeper. After 10 minutes, Lily Ross-Thomas made a surging run into the D and made a hard strike towards goal, which beat the keeper and was tapped over the line at close-range by Formstone. Ross-Thomas then hit the score sheet herself, this time assisted by the return-from-injury of captain, Gemma Taylor. Formstone then nearly made her hat trick through a volley into the top corner only to be disallowed for dangerous play. At 3-nil up at going into half time, Worthing felt confident of victory and were keen to take advantage of improving their league goal difference. Teenager star Nicole Allan made her first team debut goal by grabbing Worthing's fourth with a tap in at close range. Formstone then followed by securing her hat-trick by receiving the ball from Andrea Catlow and slotting through the keeper's legs for 5-nil. Formstone then nearly made it six after rounding the keeper only to be brought down and denied a scoring opportunity. Kirsty Pickett stepped up for her second penalty flick in as many weeks to convert Worthing's seventh goal. Another teenage star, Michaela Groves opened her Worthing account with a well-worked team goal. Chambers then blasted an impressive hat trick in ten minutes to increase the scoreline to double figures and finish off a dis-heartened Chichester side. Ross-Thomas managed to nick number eleven and her second minutes from time.

Today was the first league game back for the ladies 1s after the bitter disappointment of losing out in the top of table clash against Lewes 2s last season. Having worked hard over summer on their fitness and putting themselves to the test in the East Grinstead summer league, the girls were full of confidence.

Coming up against Mid Sussex 1st XI, a new team promoted from Sussex Division 1, Worthing knew Sussex would come out strong, seeking to prove themselves. Mid Sussex were a determined side, deserving of promotion and found themselves 2-1 up from two short corners despite an excellent top net deflection by Worthing’s Shelley Formstone.

It was at 2-1 down that Worthing showed their experience, determination, fitness and teamwork. A great short corner goal from Kirsty Pickett took Worthing to 2-2 and Worthing kept on turning up the heat. Goal 3 was from open play and was scored by one of the immensely talented Worthing youngsters (Lily Ross-Thomas). Still the Worthing ladies applied the pressure, their fitness work really paying dividend in the final quarter where Andie Chambers smashed in goal number 4.

There is a new air of determination in the Worthing side this year. Knowing they have put the work in pre season and with an immense coaching team behind them

The team started well with a good warm up and went 1-nil up fairly early on with a Chambers to Formstone cross which found the net. However Mid Sussex equalised soon after through a penalty corner, which stood into half time.

Worthing nearly increased their lead as Ross-Thomas came close to tapping the ball in at close range but was harshly brought down by a defender and sent crashing into the goal. She soon made up for it however moments after with a nice strike into the backboard from the right hand side.
On a record breaking hot Saturday morning in October the Worthing Ladies 1st XI stepped out proudly in their new kit kindly sponsored by Michael Jones and inspired to continue the winning success of last week.

The first half started with great determination from both teams. Worthing attacked well but Horsham put up a good defence successfully defending a string of short corners from which Worthing was unable to convert. Worthing soon got their break when Formstone won a P-flick from a shot on goal being saved by a foot on the line. Pickett stepped up to take the penalty shot and successfully put the ball in the left hand corner putting Worthing 1-0 up at half time.

In the second half Chambers attacked with vigour from the off propelling us towards the goal and an early short corner. With a slip from Chambers to Formstone the ball was slotted into the right hand corner putting the score at 2-0.
Worthing ladies maintained their high level of tempo despite the scorching heat stringing together some good strategic play leading to the third goal by Formstone who delivered a powerful straight strike from the top of the D.
Regardless of Worthing’s 3-0 lead the ladies maintained the pressure forcing another short corner. Hannah Saward injected the ball with speed to Chambers, the ball was slipped left to Pickett who flicked the ball towards the opponent’s right post where Hannah Saward skilfully deflected the ball into the back of the net.
A big thanks to our supporters and our manager Kathy Minchell who came to watch our 4-0 victory at Horsham.

Man of the Match: Lucy Knott

It was the first time we had played at St Paul's Catholic College, so we were unsure how the pitch would play. We had played Mid Sussex earlier on in the year and had won 4-2, so we knew what to expect of them. They wouldn't be a pushover.
For the first 25mins we dominated. It really showed how much we had improved from the start of the season. The first goal came just two minutes into the first half when Worthing were awarded a short corner. Catching their defence unaware by a left slip to Kirsty, who flicked it low to find the backboard.

Worthing remained strong with lots of opportunities from Shelley, Andie and Gemma upfront. Their keeper relished the long shots and made a lot of saves. However it didn't stop Shelley, who was on fire, taking advantage of a loose ball at top D to make it 2-0. Lucy with her versatility started the match, for the first time in central midfield. She made key switching passes out to Kala and Lilly on the flanks. With Lilly's runs into the D we were awarded another short corner. Sticking to what we knew worked, Kirsty scored again. 3-0.
Kathy’s continual support from the sideline and organisation of subs meant that Charlotte was soon in the game, creating chances with her excellent change of pace. This allowed Shelley to secure a first half victory of 4-0. It could have easily been 6-0 after having two goals disallowed.

After an inspirational team talk, we had decided to try and play our shots around the keeper. Again just 2mins into the second half saw a long corner from Lucy, back to Kirsty in the centre who slipped it to Shelley, before coolly slotting it past the keeper. 5-0.

In this half the defence had to hold strong, making clean low tackles. Jess, Heather, Alex and Hannah had to execute switches across the back to feed the ball forwards. On one occasion, after Jess driving forwards from right back, Gemma managed to pick up a rebound from the goalkeeper and hassle until she had scored. 6-0.

A loose ball in the midfield saw one of their attacking forwards head to towards Nessa in goal. She pulled a save out of the bag to keep a clean sheet, by nudging the ball wide. The final goal came just 10mins from the end, when a ball was fed from Andrea in midfield to Gemma who went on a run around the baseline, back up to the P spot before reverse flicking into the back of the net. The whistle finally blew to confirm our 7-0 victory.
A great team effort this week, resulting in a great win. With the first half of the season over, Worthing ladies 1st XI now sit 7points clear at the top of the table, after a draw at the weekend, between East Grinstead 2’s and Horsham 2’s.

Thank you to all our supporters who come to watch us every week. All that remains to say is Merry Christmas to you all from the ladies 1s.

We all went out with a positive attitude expecting a hard game especially as we didn’t recognise any of the players from our previous encounter. With places in our squad to be fought for, everyone knew they had to perform this week. We started strong and passed the ball around fast and hard, Kirsty dominated the middle of the pitch receiving and distributing and within 5 minutes Andie had got the ball in the back of the net. Within ten minutes another attacking push saw us back in their D, with a cross coming over from the left from Gemma, for Charlotte to pop it in after running off her defender. Chichester had no response to our ball movements using Alex well in the middle to switch the play, and there was excellent passing around the back from Hannah over to Lucy. As they played only two up front, Hannah had a lot of space to be move forward and get herself in the D. A stray ball picked up by Andrea was passed through to Andie on the 25, to make a run and smash it into the goal, making Andie’s second goal of the game. Not to be outdone a minute later Charlotte also got her second. Chichester saw an opportunity minutes before the first half to attack our D for a rare moment, which left Chichester scoring a good goal, for their first of the game. Anna on her second game for the ladies 1’s put in a strong performance in the middle. Into the second half we knew we could have opportunities to have more goals, with great special awareness and passing from Holly. Chichester had had a chat at half time, and we guess it must have been about their marking as they were much tighter, giving us less room to move the ball around. However it did make new spaces in other areas, leaving Jess with a lot more room down the right to get some excellent balls into the D. For Lily and the other forwards to pick up. Long into the second half we won a short corner, which Andie and gamma were able to convert through a ‘moon dog’. Chichester grew in confidence and in the last 10 minutes, had a few short corners given their way, however the defence stayed strong and once again Goody was the brick wall in the goal. Despite being on a high from the previous week’s win at Chichester the team understood this would not be an easy game!

Despite a very even game, in the first half, with good periods of play for both teams it was Worthing Ladies that took their chances and within 20 minutes found themselves 3 – 0 up. Worthing maintained their lead in the first half by working hard and containing the opposition.

The second half didn’t start so well for Worthing and following some continued pressure from East Grinstead they conceded two goals within five minutes of the re start. This seemed to kick start Worthing who picked up their game and soon scored from a short corner (thanks Jess). This spurred Worthing on who picked up their game and started to dominate the play. The passes started flowing and Worthing added to their tally by scoring a further goal. Despite further attacks from EG the Worthing defence worked hard to keep them out of the goal.
Following some good play from the Worthing forwards including Captain Gemma Taylor and Andie Chambers the team went on to score a further two goals, including a second from a short corner. The final score was 7 – 2 for Worthing ladies. Another great win for the team who has now won all four of their league games. A great start to the season.

Having not lost a game all season however and well warmed up, Worthing started hard on the challenging pitch. Charlotte Waters made her debut for the Worthing team in the forward line, asserting a strong presence and being involved in the build up to earlier goals, her efforts were rewarded just before the half with a personal place on the score sheet. Eastbourne, to their credit did not stop battling despite the score in favour of the away team.
Weather reports all week told us the snow was coming, Eastbourne wanted the match cancelled in the week and when we refused wanted a decision by 8.30am Saturday morning! As we were keen to play we didn’t make a decision until 9.15am when the pitch was already starting to thaw and all agreed it would be playable by 11.30. When Eastbourne arrived they still didn’t want to play but it wasn’t until the game started we realised why the protests had continued as they only had 10 players. Most people didn’t realise and the game was quite even with both teams having chances. Our solid defenders, Jess, Hannah, Heather and Louise had more work to do than they had done in quite a few matches and Goodie who’s improving every game had to make the most saves so far. They had a couple of very skilful players and we let them turn on us, drawing our fouls. After 25 minutes neither team had managed to score and we were playing some of the worst hockey we had played in quite a few games, often giving them the ball with slow, misjudged passes. However with league at stake and wanting to keep our perfect record we kept our patience and a pass from Toni from the middle out to Charlotte on the right resulted with our first goal. Charlotte soon got a second and a third from another pass from Toni and some excellent stick skills. With loads to work on at half time it was great that Jason whose match had been

cancelled was able to take our team talk and get us to focus on opening up the gaps that would arise from them being one player down.

We were determined to improve to show Jason how well we had been playing and things definitely started to get better. The switching across the field with excellent speed of passes from Hannah and Jess forward to Diva and Lily pulled Eastbourne apart and some excellent movement from Gemma and a pass across the D resulted in a lovely goal in the air from Andie with a run off the p spot. Not be outdone Gemma picked up one of her own and she used her speed to take the ball around the goalkeeper and tap it into the goal. Eastbourne were getting tired and sloppy and our defence now prevented even the skilful players from getting past so we had much more of the play. A short corner gave us a goal from a left slip from Kirsty and then a run down the left passing across from Gemma to Diva in the middle straight to Andie in the D made it 7 with a beautiful strike in to the bottom right corner. Great result for Diva’s final game before she leaves travelling when hopefully when she returns the Ladies 1’s will have finally gained promotion to the South League which has just been out of reach us for many years. Still a bit work to do girls I’ll be checking the results…

Following from last weeks 9-0 win in our first vase cup match, we were determined to bring the a similar success to our league match against Crawley’s 1st eleven, however we knew it would be a tough match, and that Crawley would put up a good fight.

Similarly to the previous week, we began with a slower start, with Crawley showing a strong defence against our various advances. Finally after a string of unsuccessful short corner opportunities Andie Chambers was able to put one in the back of the goal, putting Worthing 1-0 half way through the first half. Following on from this Andie was able to score another two goals within a minute from each other, awarding Andie her hat trick, and making our half time score 3-0.

Thanks to our weekly fitness sessions Worthing came out feeling revived, and full of energy, really giving us the edge and earning Worthing a short corner within five minutes of the starting whistle, of which Shelley Formstone was able to convert. After this Crawley gained more momentum and began to attack more prominently, however with players of all positions working back, and covering players we were able to win the ball back quickly from which Shelley was able to score another. Our strength in formation really showed as we were able to keep the ball boxed in their half of the pitch, allowing Shelley to once again, slip in yet another goal, from an impossible angle. From this point onwards Worthing really stepped into their rhythm with various advances from all the midfield and forwards, from these advances we were able to gain another short corner from which Andie tallied up her fourth goal, putting the score at 7-0. Andie was able to put in another goal taking our final score to 8-0.

The girls travelled to Broadbridge Heath on Saturday to face second placed Horsham 2's, who had been relegated from South 3b League last season. Worthing were already 2 points clear at the top following Horsham 2’s draw with Brighton 2’s and so were determined to keep their 100% record and increase their lead to 5 points clear at the top of Sussex Premier League.

Worthing were expecting a tough game against Horsham 2s, who had strength to draw on from their National League first team. This expectation was confirmed when Horsham scored quickly at the start of the game to go 1-0 up and leave Worthing stunned. However it did not take long for Worthing to settle and start passing the ball around which led to a great run and cross down the right wing by captain Gemma Taylor into Andie Chambers, waiting at the far post to sweep in for 1-1.

Tensions were raised as the game got into full flow, much to the delight of the crowd of away supporters, which had travelled to support the league leaders. Worthing then however faced a major setback when Horsham were awarded a penalty corner which was struck high into the path of front-runner Hannah Saward, who was unable to avoid it and received a nasty blow to the head. The game was suspended whilst Saward was treated and sent off to hospital for some stitches. Manager Kathy Minchell then made a key replacement by bringing on the third of the Catlow sisters, Toni Catlow, back into Midfield to make her season's debut after being away in London. Lucy Knott then capably stepped into Saward's left back position to seal up the defence.

Worthing soon fought back and made some strong attacks at the Horsham goal resulting in a penalty corner which was converted by Kirsty Pickett to put Worthing into the lead for the first time. Toni Catlow then cemented her return by increasing Worthing's lead to 3-1 through a shot into the right hand corner. Horsham were not fazed however and continued to put immense pressure on the Worthing defence but it was keeper Nessa Green, Heather Vaughan, Jess Lumbard, Alex Catlow and Lucy Knott who were solid at the back and remained a wall which Horsham found it very difficult to break through.

Lilly Ross-Thomas, Kala Groves, Andrea Catlow showed great fitness and were outstanding in midfield by breaking down Horsham and feeding the ball up front. Taylor and Chambers then finished off proceedings by a repeat of the first goal, a cross from the right and swept into the goal to make it 4-2, much to the delight of manager Kathy Minchell and the away support.

Gemma not to be left without a goal of her own whizzed round their defence and scored her trademark reverse flick. Even Hannah got in on the action scoring her first goal in open play, winning her bet with Kirsty who could only put in another short corner!
Worthing Ladies 1st XI started the second half of the season with a home game to Brighton & Hove in the Sussex Vase cup. The team started well and were very quickly awarded a short corner. The keeper saved the first strike and after a goalmouth scramble Charlotte Waters scored the first goal. Within 2 minutes of the start of the game Worthing had scored their first goal of 2012! Despite Worthing continuing to have most of the pressure a short corner was conceded soon after by Worthing giving Brighton the opportunity to even up the score. Despite a good strike by Brighton, defender Heather Vaughan managed to get her stick to the shot and deflected it wide. After a bit more pressure Brighton won a further short corner and unfortunately this time Worthing were unable to keep this one out. Rather than let their heads go down Worthing got straight back into it and after a great run down the right wing and perfect cross from Charlotte, Andie Chambers scored her first goal of the match. This was then followed by two further goals from Andie, the first after some great work from Kirsty Pickett in midfield and the second from a short corner just before half time. Despite quite an even first half Worthing saw themselves 4-1 up at half time.

The second half didn't start so well for Worthing and they were not able to build on the good lead they started the half with. Brighton however seemed to have a new determination and capitalised on Worthing's lack of focus putting the Worthing defence under alot of pressure with continued attacks on goal. These attacks soon led to a short corner being awarded to Brighton. Again they made the most of this opportunity and the score was soon 4-2. This seemed to spur Brighton on and they soon scored two more goals one from another short corner and the other from a flick, which was awarded after an unfortunate foot on the line by a Worthing defender. With the score now even both teams fought hard to find the winning goal, both defences working hard to keep the ball out of the net. Just as the game was about to end and everyone thought we were going to flicks Worthing won a short corner. The first shot was saved by the keeper but unfortunately the Brighton defence were unable to get the ball out of the D. It was Worthing who quickly pounced on the free ball and captain Gemma Taylor put the ball in the back of the net to win the game for Worthing. Next week Worthing have their first league game after the Christmas break which is at home to Horsham 3rd XI.

Worthing started pretty strong, but so did the Spartans. Their solid players held fast and they had a couple of very skilful girls who caused Worthing some problems, driving from midfield and penetrating the D. After 15 minutes of equal battling, Worthing started to relax and play their fast passing game, which was rewarded by a goal from Andie Chambers on 21 minutes. Worthing continued to pressure the Spartans but were unable to secure another goal. 1-0 at half time.

With a good motivational chat from team manager Kathy, Worthing started the second half much brighter. Taking the ‘push back’ forward, Andie Chambers created more positive play with Charlotte and Shelley and was rewarded with her second goal, 2-0 to Worthing. Worthing’s tactical switch to enable Kirsty to mark a pivotal Spartan’s player out of the game was starting to produce results. Andrea, back from injury found form in the centre and was distributing some great balls wide, one of which found Holly Allan. Holly made one of a multitude of penetrating runs towards the Spartans D and distributed perfectly to Charlotte who weaved her magic and put Worthing 3-0 up. The Spartans’ heads had now dropped and Worthing could sense that they had to make this time count.

More attacking play resulted in a couple of short corners for Worthing, 2 of which were hammered home by Kirsty Pickett, 5-0 Worthing. More and more pressure mounted from the midfield with Kala’s ceaseless energy and hassling of any Spartan player with the ball. Kala fed some lovely passes into Shelley, Charlotte and Gemma. Shelley using her pace, strength and individual skill to put two thumping strikes away within a couple of minutes of each other just prior to the final whistle. 7-0 Worthing.

A nice result for Worthing after a gritty weekend of hockey, good luck to the Spartans ladies who undoubtedly deserve to be playing in a higher league. Thanks to Mandi Stevens for protecting our net.
