After a tough opening match against Lewes 2nd XI last week the 2’s were keen to show that they can keep their structure and discipline away to Mid Sussex 1st XI this week. After a promising start we moved the ball around well and kept our structure for the first 20 minutes it was clear that Mid Sussex were a strong fit side and if we going to get anything from this it would be a close game. Mid Sussex came close on a couple of occasions early on with some fast attacking play forcing Brazil to make some fantastic reaction saves down low on the left and right (can’t teach that!). It was just after this that the wheels came off, an error at the back meant that we gifted their centre forward the ball in front of our goal and he gratefully slotted it away. Five minutes later a Brazil clearance nearly took the head off their centre half and the resulting short was converted. After this we were on the back foot and mid Sussex gaining confidence started to relax and come at us from all sides, scoring two more well taken goals by the end of the half.

Second half we started well but had it all to do, the youngsters (Mark, Sam, and Luc) created a couple of nice chances up front with their pace but were bundled off the ball by the strong opposition. Mid Sussex scored two more in the second half making their most of their superior fitness final result 6-0. Definitely a disappointing result but we showed what we are capable of in terms of structure and keeping possession. From these opening games it is clear that the team has what it takes but if we want to make it count we need to be at training on Tuesday 6:30 St Andrews and that some of us need to work on our speed and match fitness!

It was going to be a tough game as Burnt Ash are 4th in the league and Worthing 2nd XI 3rd from bottom. The team expertly lead by Andy Allan advised his players to play hockey for 70 mins. Once again we lost the toss and Burnt Ash pushed back. Indeed they played the ball backwards whilst their strikers rushed forward confusing the Worthing players. The second pass - an aerial - and the next pass GOAL! Appeals were made which the umpire ignored and allowed the goal. This must have been the fastest goal scored in a game of hockey. Not wanting to be defeated Worthing then went on the attack. Passing speedily and accurately. For the next 15 minutes Worthing had most of the game and putting the opposition under some real pressure. Unfortunately they were strong on the counterattack. A well-placed tackle won Burnt Ash the ball and they went on the attack. Their accurate and fast passing game saw the ball disappear in the back of the net. Again today Brazil had a brilliant game making save after save and only letting 3 goals in before half time.

The second half saw the game become more physical Worthing won a few penalty corners but could not convert them. We played well by passing and moving off the ball. There was great play between Luc and Luke. Matt held the midfield superbly ensuring that players were in the right place. Ben made some will timed tackles denying the opposition a push on Goal. Again on the attack Luc Hinton drove forward and into the D lining up to take a shot at goal when the opposition player ploughed through his back. Short Corner given. Short corner was taken but miss-controlled by Luc at the top of the D. Luke Helmer also managed to miss it and Luc Hinton took it to his reverse to get the shot away, which was saved by the keeper. However the Umpire gave a wide, as it had been the 1st shot at goal. The battle continued with pockets of play in front of both goals. During one of these pockets Worthing won a short. Andy pushed out, Luc Hinton stopped the ball and passes it to Rex, in the meantime Luke Helmer pretends to drag-flick, leaving the ball for Rex to hit home this time successfully. This is now 4 goals in 4 games for Rex! 4 - 1! Burnt Ash had not expected this and felt somewhat under pressure. Worthing felt on top of the world but were expertly brought back down to earth by Andy. Play continued and legs were getting tired as the game went from end to end. During the last 15 mins Burnt Ash managed score another 3 goals. The team played as a team starting to understand who each is thinking and reading the game. Well done. From the side lines the game is far more interesting to watch as passing has become more rapid and accurate and players are getting into spaces and trusting each other in their positions. Next week home against Blackheath - a game that could be won!

Saturday 22 October 2011 saw Worthing 2nd XI go to the oldest hockey club in the Country: Blackheath 1st XI. The game started well with Worthing have most of the possession and putting Blackheath under pressure. Some good passing took place and saw the forwards in Blackheath's 'D'.

Inexperience prevented Worthing from breaking down the opposition's defence and slotting the ball past their keeper. Nevertheless Worthing kept the pressure on. A pass from the middle of the park to the wing was intercepted by a Blackheath player who quickly passed up the pitch and before Worthing defence could react the ball was put in the back of the net. 1 - 0 to Blackheath. Worthing never gave up and ended the 1st half 2-0 down.

The second half saw Worthing again putting Blackheath under pressure. At some points our players were showing tiredness until Luc Hinton received the ball in their half and quickly worked his way through a few players to find himself on a 1 to 1 with the keeper. Keeping his composure and committing the keeper to slot the ball in the back of the net when out of blue the defender wiped him out! Surely this was cause for a P-Flick? No the umpire decided that this did not warrant a p-flick but merely a short corner and no card. Surely the rules of Hockey have not changed overnight or have they? Worthing took the corner and as so many others previously in the match could not convert it. Slightly deflated by this action the team tried to regroup and motivate each other when Blackheath saw the opportunity to increase their lead even further. Brazil making some superb saves during the game but due to some defensive errors conceded a couple of goals in quick succession. The fulltime whistle did not come soon enough and the game ended 6 - 0 to Blackheath 1st XI. The score line most certainly did not reflect the way in which Worthing played. Well done lads it can only get better!

The game started off at a pace that caught some of the senior members of the team off guard and an opposition ariel into our 25 put the defence under pressure straight away leading to a first minute goal for the opposition, not the best of starts. This pace and intensity was maintained by the opposition squeezing our players in and forcing mistakes, which were numerous in the first ten minutes, at this point it looked like the game might be slipping away. The second goal came from a ‘kit malfunction’ when an attempted clearance from Brazil fell to an opposition striker who finished the chance off well in the bottom corner. At this time it would have been easy to let our heads go down and fall apart, fortunately this wasn’t the case and we maintained possession to allow ourselves a bit of time and space.

The tides turned and it was our turn to pressure the opposition defence, eventually they cracked and the short corners started to mount up, shot and drag flicks which on other days would have gone it were saved and deflected by some good on the line reaction from the other team’s defenders and keeper. Eventually the hard work paid off and Locky slotted away his first, this boosted the team and after a positive half time talk we came out fighting and again the short corners kept on coming and again the saves were made. After some good defence and midfield link ups an opportunity arose and Luc Hinton’s reverse shot was unlucky to go in but earned a ‘P’ flick, Luc bit the bullet and stepped up and went bottom corner and was unfortunate not to score again. The team spirit was kept high and another short corner was won, this time Lowin took a different approach and slotted away our second goal to draw level. As play continued cracks started to appear in the oppositions defence and discipline, we capitalised on this and with five minutes to go we managed to counter one of their attacks leaving us with a two on four attack, Dan and myself communicated well and after leaving the defenders eating our dust a pass through the last defender left Dan with a one on one with the keeper, as usual he found the back of the net to give a dramatic climax to the game with five minutes to go. Everyone dropped back and managed to hold out to the end of the game with some great saves from Brazil and some dodgy tackling to break up play and secure the three points and round off a great game.

Worthing won the pushback and started strong. However, Crawley's centre mid was strong and quite often left unmarked, intercepted a pass from the mid to wide and immediately counterattacked. The Defence not quite ready for this panicked and completely missing the ball giving Crawley the opportunity to score. Worthing re-grouped and played well on the right with some accurate passes. A lot of the game took place in Worthing's own half. Panic in front of our own goal let to Worthing giving away short corners. A lovely drag flick from Crawley could not be saved by Brazil. Worthing again came back with some strong and positive play determined to walk away from this game with something. At last Worthing won a short corner but missed. Half time did not come too soon. 3-0. 2nd half Sam Gill got the ball and driving forwards was abruptly run off the ball and the pitch. Umpire presented Yellow card. This should have been the point where Worthing needed to cash in on the advantage. There was some strong and accurate passing. Play again took part mostly on the right where Luke Helmer tackled and got the ball quick pass to Alex Minchell who took a shot but went wide. Crawley attacked again, Brazil in frenzy to clear the ball collided with a Crawley player, (or did he lose his balance as foot slipped over the ball?) and a Penalty Flick was awarded. Needless to say Crawley scored the goal - 4-0. Worthing had some good play and should have come away with more than a loss. Matters weren’t helped by the fact that Adrian Smith pulled a muscle early in the game leaving the team without a sub. Final score 6-0.
