Our first league game of the season saw us against old rivals East Grinstead 5th XI, our previous encounter being the end of the 2009-2010 season where EG had ended our 17 win streak but with the league already won it was more of an annoyance than a problem.
East Grinstead newly promoted from Division 5 had everything to play for and so did we. On a gloriously sunny after it began, a very senior team vs. a team of 14-16 years olds, this could be interesting. Youth vs. Experience. Worthing looked strong, some excellent passing and teamwork saw us go up 1-0 through a penalty corner scored by Luke Helmer, EG couldn't seem to string anything together finally having a shot on goal excellently saved by Joe Fowler. Worthing surged again, play barely leaving the opposition half and a second from Luke Helmer gave us a bit of a lead into the break. By now the heat was taking its toll on both sides, high 20's temperature is not usual Hockey weather.
We went back out strong slightly more sluggish but some excellent play from all, Horsham were the first to score, the lead slipping away, but James Hanson was the next on Worthing’s score card slotting in a rebound of a Helmer shot. 3-1, but in true 5th XI style we let them through again 3-2.
Playing speed seemed to drop for a while, neither team really making anything work, EG came on another surge, but again excellent defensive work kept them out. Jack Hillier was the next on the scorecards followed by Jon Humphreys. Final score 5-2 to Worthing.

The first half just saw both teams cancelling each other out, a multitude of Mid Sussex shorts not converted, Worthings attacks being broken down, though some good play from both sides, halftime the score was 0-0. After a team talk Worthing went out determined and after ten minutes a Marc Taylor and Mark Sallis attack resulted in the keepers deflection being slotted in by Mark Sallis. Determined for more some good attacks saw some chances but the final goal of the game came from Mid Sussex with ten minutes to spare. Final score 1-1 but another point in the bag remaining top half of the table.
Another sunny game this week and Worthing after a long break were hungry for points. Travelling to Crawley to play East Grinstead the game began, as expected this wasn't going to be easy as we were playing EG away, so with the addition of a few choice players we had our hands full, Worthing fought hard to keep them at bay but EG scored mid way though the half, our forwards barely able to make it near the goal. A foot on the line saw a P-Flick awarded, put wide but well covered by keeper Joe.

The second half was slightly more even, EG having less attacks due to one of their players leaving at half time.
Worthing travelled to Penguins this week, a loss in a pre season friendly and 7 points from 3 games Worthing were looking for more. Penguins were certainly more dominant in the first 10 minutes, having numerous attacks against a mixture of 5th, 6th and Tigers players. We worked hard to make some good attacks ourselves. Penguins were the first to score but it sparked something in Worthing and it was soon 1-1 through Tiger Adam Hart. Half time score 1-1.

A team talk and a desire for glory and Worthing were ready to attack.

Now I am going to have trouble writing the second half of the game and obeying the rules of the Circle, i.e. don’t be abusive about players or umpires, so here goes. Worthing went back out and Penguins were straight on the attack. Scoring two in quick succession, 3-1 Worthing looked deflated but soon to get one back through Aaron Aitman, 3-2. Penguins on the attack again and a foot “near” the goal was awarded as a P-Flick to our disgust. Thanks Ann for trying to question the decision. A good attempt from Joe but with no luck, 4-2, now we did look tired and seriously deflated, we made some attacks but couldn’t place anything, Penguins attacked again and a ball hit my foot not that I noticed anyway, a general comment of “that didn’t hit my foot” and a yellow card awarded to Captain Dan French from their umpire. Seriously disappointing especially with a Penguins forward commenting to me it should have been a warning first. Final score 5-2 to Penguins, much to learn from after this weeks defeat but retaining a reasonable position in the table we go into next week.

Worthing started dominantly the first ten minutes spent mainly in the Penguins half, a goal from Jon Humphreys put Worthing up but we then fell apart, Penguins scoring two goals in two attacks, dominating they came on the attack again and a ball hit in from the baseline at the edge of the D which team captain Dan French and keeper Joe Fowler thought was going off rolled in to make it 3-1 before the break.
Worthing came back more organised and much improved some repositioning saw our defence strengthened and plenty more attacks, both the offending parties from the 3rd goal more than making up for it with some outstanding saves. Jon Humphreys scored once more but the vital goal eluded us. Final score 3-2. With an away game in Eastbourne next week and with only 4 points separating us from the bottom 2, though still in a possible relegation slot at the end of the days play a win is a must.
Thanks to Juniors Matt Isaacs and Robbie Brown and to Ann Q for umpiring.

The games commenced on the extremely bouncy but at least wet Durrington astro with Worthing now back to a full 5th XI team after previous unavailability with a back line consisting of our '09 -'10 line up with Al Scott back from a season out and Ukrainian export David Lock back on home turf, the game flowed, both teams attacking and defending well, Worthing looking stronger and more organised than previous weeks though plenty of work still needed, Crawley were the first to score, continually attacking in packs of 5 breaking through, two more from Crawley had the chances slipping away but some good work saw Worthing get one back through James Hanson. Half Time 3-1.
