2025/26 season review: A year of growth, promotions and outstanding team performances

Worthing Hockey Club enjoyed a strong and progressive 2025/26 season across all teams, underpinned by impressive depth and continued growth, including the introduction of a new Open/Men’s 7th team.

The Men’s 1st XI delivered another excellent campaign, finishing 5th in the highly competitive South East Division 1 West, consolidating their position as contenders for league honours heading into next season. Similarly, the Women’s 1st XI enjoyed their strongest season for some time, climbing the table week by week to secure an impressive 4th place finish in Martlets Division 1.

The Men’s 2nd XI, competing in Martlets Division 1, also achieved a top-four finish following promotion in 2024/25, marking an excellent return at a higher level. The Women’s 2nd XI narrowly missed out on a top-half finish by just one point, recording 8 wins and 4 draws across 18 games in Martlets Division 3.

The Men’s 3rd XI will join the 2s in Martlets Division 1 next season with promotion after a fantastic 2nd place finish in Division 2, driven by a strong second half of the campaign—finishing just behind runaway winners Brighton & Hove 4s. A superb achievement—congratulations to all involved!

Elsewhere, the Men’s 4th XI secured their place in Martlets Division 2 with a series of hard-fought matches, including a run of six matches decided by a single goal, laying strong foundations for 2026/27. The Men’s 5th XI enjoyed a solid mid-table finish in Division 3, highlighted by taking four points from the top two sides at home shortly after christmas.

The standout performance of the season came from the Men’s 6th XI, who were runaway champions of Division 4—unbeaten all season, dropping just two points, and finishing with an incredible goal difference of +129. Brilliant work—congratulations!

The newly formed Men’s 7th XI also had a positive debut season in Division 4, fulfilling all but two fixtures, winning six matches and earning 18 points. Crucially, the side has provided an excellent platform for junior players to transition into adult hockey.

On the junior side, Wolves secured a top-four finish in the Sussex Junior Development League, building a strong squad with younger players progressing through the ranks and older players stepping into senior hockey.
