Club History & Officers

Worthing Hockey Club has a long history, dating back to our launch in 1896. We were one of the seven founder members of the Sussex County Hockey Association in 1899, and have enjoyed considerable success over the years.

Many past and present members have represented their country, county and regions, including past club president R H ‘Paddy’ Selman FIH (Grade 1). Paddy was a World Cup and Olympic Umpire, and has worked hard to make the club well known not only in Sussex, but throughout the world of hockey.

We are proud of our club and its affiliations to both Sussex Hockey Association and England Hockey.

For much of the club’s history, it was based at the Manor Sports Ground by the A24 going into Worthing. With 5 grass pitches outside the clubhouse, WHC thrived as one of the top clubs in Sussex and the South of England. As astroturf hockey took over, the club base stayed at the Manor with home matches at St.Andrews, Durrington and Angmering Schools. In 2018 WHC merged with Penguin Mens Hockey Club and began its search for a new permanent home with pitch and clubhouse together. Today the club’s HQ is at The Angmering School, and boasts an astroturf for home games and training, and on-site changing and catering and bar facilities. Our member-funded clubhouse was opened in March 2019 provides a stunning pitchside location to comfortably watch games and host social events.

As well as men’s ladies, junior and senior teams, we have friendly social atmosphere enjoyed by our large membership.
