Wolves are joint top with opening day league win

The Wolves lads put in a fantastic performance to win their opening Sussex Boys Development League match against Brighton last Saturday. Remember that’s the side that were the runaway league leaders last year, and even despite old man Birdy playing for us, they still beat us 6-1 previously.

Brighton Flippers 0 Worthing Wolves 1

So to this match. The work rate on Saturday was probably the best we have ever seen from the Wolves. After our usual shaky first ten minutes (we really need to work on that!), the lads settled in and started to create chances.

It was a pretty chaotic game from start to finish with a lot of effort from both sides, but not always a lot of shots on target. On occasions when the lads passed the ball as we know they can, they raced from one end of the pitch to the other creating scoring chances.

We eventually got what we deserved when Oaklee somehow managed to score with a duffed drag flick through the keeper’s legs, but as they say, they all count!

From there we continued to cause Brighton problems, but they came back into the game and dominated for ten or fifteen minutes of the second half. However the team really dug in, there were some outstanding tackles from all the boys, some great saves from Morgs (including one that actually went through his legs but somehow he managed to dive backwards and clear it!).

Dave Matthews and Steven Bird agreed that it’s probably one of our proudest moments as coaches, seeing the lads defend that goal with all their energy, and come off the pitch exhausted but happy!

Very well done! Loved it!

Birdy and Dave.
